XCEF IC - In-Base

((OOC thread.  IC Mission thread. ))
XCEF - In-Base

I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world.

President Ronald Reagan, United Nations General Assembly, 21 September 1987

High above the world, eyes looked down coldly. There was no need for them to speak. They had their Purpose. It would be done. The alien craft, a saucer-shaped construction, sleek and flawless, slipped into the atmosphere. It was cruising in the lower atmosphere when one of the native's war-craft was detected. It approached, clearly on an attack vector. Different native fighters had tried before, no match for the armaments of the aliens.
Destroy it. There must be no interference.

Obediently, weapons locked onto the native fighter. A single shot was prepared. No more had been needed to vapourise the primitive steel and aluminum structures used by the natives. The plasma beam reached out and splashed across the fighter, and the attention of the slaves in the alien craft already were turning away when their screens beeped. The native fighter was still active. It had launched missiles.

One of the slaves had time to see the missiles just before they struck. If it had somehow been able to look at the missile in the brief second before detonation, it would have seen there was writing on the side in one of the native languages:
"E.T. Go Home".

Deep beneath the hills of Wales, United Kingdom, a room erupted in cheers. The Commander, however, did not crack a smile, their steely eyes gazing at the main screen.
"Strike One condition?"
"Already airborne, Commander." The reply crackled back.
The Commander's expression did not change. In a way, the interceptor had the easy job.

The skyranger had already departed, leaving Strike Two to wait in the base for the next mission. The Commander had to wait before anything was brought in before research started, but...
"Engineering's online, commander."
If necessary, they could start producing another Inteceptor.

The Commander pondered. In the barracks, the men and women of Strike Two waited for their chance.

Andy silently watched the launch of the Skyranger.  He'd be lying to himself if he said he didn't wish he was on there.  After his injury, he wanted nothing more than to make something of himself; the chance to truly prove his worth in the field.  This was a once in a lifetime opportunity... and he was sitting out the first mission.

No matter.  He had his orders, and shooting down one ship wouldn't end this war.

Everett scratched his head as he watched the skyranger depart, frowning as he did.
"Why the hell don't we send out an extra? And why is it unarmed? I mean, I know there's a chance for the aliens to shoot at it at tge zone, but they probably would already shoot at it. And don't feed me any bullshit about damage to artifacts or the weapons being to weak, 30mm cannons, loaded with AP wouldn't destroy too much, and would be able to penn enough to be-able to support them... Ahwell, but what do I know? Im just a medic...

Martzel Arriola responded in a sort of lackadaisacal manner. "I wouldn't give them shit about it,  they've probably put a loooooot of effort and thought into it. Goes over my head sometimes, but then again it probably goes over all of our heads."

Andy shrugged.  "Best not to question brass too much.  They don't have to tell us why."

"Our strength lies in ingenuity and the indomitable human spirit!" Faust announced proudly. A moment later she continued, a bit less theatrically, but still trying to sound inspiring. "And, more practically, you don't beat a superior enemy with overwhelming numbers and raw hardware. If you could do that, they wouldn't be a 'superior' enemy."

"So what are the best tactics to fighting an alien?  Man has spent thousands of years fighting other men, and we know what's up.  How does an alien being fight?"

"Hmm. Can't wait for the details of their debrief."

Vote on interceptor for manufacturing 'cause three free slots and not much else to do research/manufacture wise.

"Skyranger's coming back, sir. Lot of injuries, but no fatalities. We're completely outmatched in technology."
"No surprise." The Commander remarked. "Get the Labs on high alert. Tell them their samples are coming in."

The troops are offloaded the Skyranger, many straight to the Medbay. The rest sit through a long debrief before they're allowed back out into the barracks.

New Research options:

Sectoid Autopsy - 50 SP
Requires 3 Sectoid corpses

Alien Alloys - 70 Sp
Requires 3 Alien Alloys

Weapons Fragments - 70 SP
Requires 5 Weapons Fragments

A research option and a manufacturing option must be chosen.
