The Spanish, dulled from the numerous previous unsuccessful attempt, forgot to position enough sentries, allowing French troops to storm the Spanish capital under the cover of night. An heroic last stand in the building of the Spanish Academy of Science ends under a storm of French shells. Corsica, Portugal and Catalonia all surrender to the French troops, while the Spanish Emperor barely escape to Andalusia.
