Sheep not mating
« on: November 20, 2014, 10:25:11 am »

I embarked with two Ewe's and one Ram.

Roughly five years later - no lambs.  They're happily grazing away in an underground pasture, and other things are reproducing just fine - just not these lambs.

This a known bug, or am I doing something wrong?

maybe your females or male are sterile, have you tried getting more ewes and rams from traders?

With bad luck the Ram in question is not interested into the opposite gender.
The cahnces for this to happen is rare, but possible.
Sterile is such a harsh word for that issue. And neither a very fitting one on that matter.
But that beside the point.

I thought with animals it was just sterility, but I suppose it could be a gay ram. I did not realize that was in the code for animals.

It would be hard to tell, since DF animals mate by osmosis.

Since most animals are non-sapient and don't have any concept of traditions like "romance" or "marriage" anyway I think it's fair to call them sterile as long as the effect is "can't reproduce under any circumstances". You're probably going to be butchering a lot of them anyway, (Or at least, I do) caring about their hypothetical feelings seems... odd.

In the future, I suggest embarking with an equal number of males/females. That halves your chances at lacking a breeding population.

I think it's a bug that's causing any asexuality in creatures. I doubt it's an intended feature.

no sterility, or any sexuality other than bi or hetero, if you prefer, is, I believe, working as intended.

Yes, it's a known problem.

Roughly 25% of creatures are "unproductive". Breaking that 25% down, around 4% are asexual/uninterested, approximately 1% are strictly homosexual, and 20% are unwilling to commit to marriage. Animals being unwilling to reproduce outside of wedlock is almost certainly a bug, but the other "problems" may well be intended behavior.

someone just needs to mod in animal weddings and this problem would solve itself.

And you can find out what the problem is by using Dwarf Therapist. It lists the sexual orientation for both dwarves and animals.

It's a shame there's not an animal husbandry labor. Link might offend those who are particularly easy to offend.

I think with the coming breeding changes Toady has mentioned, this could actually be important (eg, keeping your populations separate and controlling breeding)

Nobody said anything about doing it for pleasure. I sure wouldn't want to do it, myself.

It's done to get them to breed, so you can carry on with your other agricultural duties with one less random element making your life more difficult.

Otherwise you have to manage what animals have contact with other animals, it's on their schedule not yours, and there's a (usually small) chance of injury.
