"I wouldn't say that, Eesh. You're a city mouse if I read you correctly, spent all your life on the seas and the streets, right? It's a little different out in the wild. You always gotta be aware of the animals around you. If you ain't careful and you ain't paying attention, something may not be as far off as it sounds."

He cocked his head to the side and listened further.

"Ain't heard it again yet, but let's all keep an ear out."

Jesseo could see slight 'slopes' in the mud, as if something slid or rolled or was dragged toward the water, but no foot tracks or shoe prints were present at all.

Suddenly Beryn and Aiesha could see a mass of appendages and huge thorax moving from between the trees. The mandibles were shining with some unpleasant goo as the giant spider set its sights on two fresh exotic treats that visited the island.

Another arachnid rustled the foliage not far from Jesseo!

"Wait, w- I can handle this! Something was dragged into the waters. Just need to get to better ground. Go help Aiesha! I can handle this one! Or-or not."

I mean, if I couldn't...then what does that say about me in the future?

"No can do, Jess. She already asked me to protect you and I already gave my word that I would. We'll go round her up as soon as this one is taken care of, all right?"

Jesseo looked aside to give Beryn a note of disapproval, before deciding otherwise by aiming her weapon towards the beast beyond the trees.

"Right. We'll take care of this quick. I hope you won't get too hurt though. I'd like to see how a merchant-guard fights--I'm very familiar with those types."

She gave him a smile, which also gave off a challenge in its tone.

"I just hope the rest are alright. I saw another skeleton on the path heading west was all. But I really wonder what caused them to animate. I did not...readily detect energy around the ones we've faced."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"I'm more of a hunter than a guard. And giant spiders ain't nothing to me. There's worse up'n in the mountains of Xos."

He glanced over at Jesseo.

"Eh, I don't really care what animates 'em. As long as we can put 'em back down and find our friends and allies, right?"

Jesseo nodded. She was happy at the casual discourse taking place--they were both ready for the spider, so why not pass the time chatting while being vigilant?
"Yes but-I can't still help but think that all this is somewhat connected in a way to what happened to the Captain's ship. Also its nice to see a fellow hunter out here. What brought you into the profession?"

"I'unno. It was that or take up another trade around Xos, and I ain't really got it in me to stay in one place for too long I guess. Wanderin' the wilds was more appealing than sitting around and, I dunno, fletching arrows. I ain't saying that ain't useful, and someone's got to do it, it just ain't me either way."

"What about you? You look more like a priestess than a huntress - no offense meant."

Jesseo avoided the fashion statement--she was not a fashionable person.

"I don't see any offense at all by nature, really. And, well, these are the robes used by my family. Made for protection from the weather as well as pickpockets. So...it doesn't look that aesthetically pleasing at best, but it works out well. I was just a merchant's daughter plying the northern routes. I'm used to long travel and spent my time around knowing the...say, deeper ideas of the people around here. T'was more appealing than just riding along and resting. Reading books and all. I think that's why I look priest-like maybe?"

She looked at her staff.

"Though I was taught how to fish with a spear before, and from that I was taught how to handle myself using naught but a blunted staff. As my dad taught me, a girl's gotta know how to survive. But anyway, could...I ask about your hair? Is it customary that you and-well, Stheno have the same color and such."
