biome dependent farming
« on: November 19, 2014, 05:31:16 pm »

It would be nice if the things you could farm depended not only on the season, but also on the temperature of the biome. So, maybe if you'd play in a cold or freezing biome, the default "farm seasons" would get shifted towards the colder side. That way, in a colder biome, the typical "winter plants" would be farmable during a longer part of the year, compared to a temperate biome, and the typical "summer plants" would not be farmable at all.. And ofcourse the reverse would apply aswell; In a hot biome, everything would shift towards the hot side.
By introducing such a system, some plants that could only be grown in extremly hot or cold environments could be introduced :)

I'm pretty sure this is already a thing, you can't farm pineapples in the same places you can wheat.

Though it would be nice if a particularly extreme difference in temperatures between winter and summer meant alternating crop-lists rather than just one set of crops having an off-season.

Yup, this is already in game. If you want it to actually matter for more crops, it's a simple matter of going into your raw files and changing more crops from [BIOME_ANY] or whatever it is to a couple specific ones instead.

Seasonal would be nice though, which isn't in the game. Although you can already hack that in yourself too in a more complicated fashion by giving seeds heat and cold damage values, which will cause the crops to get destroyed mid-growth if the actual tile temperature gets too extreme.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
