Might be a better policy to not attach weapons at all to suit variants.
Normally I would agree, however at times there are special circumstances. If, for instance, I could conceivably make a MACS Heavy Weapons package that just takes "any" heavy weapon and powers/reloads it to ease the operation for the user, it would work - however in this case the design is specifically intended to build on the particular properties of the suit, to effect on the particular issues of the one specific weapon. I can't just sell a design with a supercooling system and empty space in its arms.

Likewise, a "gunbot carrier" suit can't just come with the option to install gunbots, it must come with them. Like a gun comes with ammo.

As for Heph "package deals"... you know, I don't see why not, really. Not the "you'd be crazy to buy other things" part, but how about we make "starter packs"? It's a concept similar to that of MACS, standardized sets of mission equipment. Want to be the regular soldier? Get the version with built-in cutting lasers and a grenade launcher. Artillery support? The version with the over-shoulder railgun. Breaching and melee? Ground mobility wheels, verniers, kinamps, and tesla saber. Anti-infantry? Turreted FELs, integrated Testaments, namite/goop sprayer. Field medic? Deployable shields, cryo-backpack, and enough medical supplies to open your own hospital.

Each of these is the same cost, balanced in various ways, but each of them is more expensive than the "basic" default suit, which you can kit out with whatever else you want for more money.

I have a proposition based on long thought after Xan's death.

Can we make an Idiot-Proofer? Essentially a button that locks down most of a suit's functions that a person with -1 or -2 Aux could conceivably fuck up (ie all of them but moving) and makes it impossible to remove any part of it unless the mode is deactivated, which is a long and arduous process?

As of anything would protect you from the reality bending powers of a bad roll for a bad stat.

Yep, something actually would. You see, Nikitian Greiss had a button like that installed at some point... And we know that this solution is even reality-bending-proof, chiefly because Steve has been using it as such in the first place.
 :P

In other news, I'm wondering whether we should run that expedition to investigate the missing college asap, with the timeskip incoming and possibility for the anomaly simply closing off in the meantime. The second thing that is bugging me is whether we should try and also raid for Doc's test subjects in the same go; is that transport ship suitable for shipping population, by the way? And can that be done in the way of a black-op (or maybe even casting us as UWM research group, with all the implications) to avoid getting the reputation hit for ARM?

I don't know if we have enough stasis chambers to bulk transport people. But I would concur that it'd be prudent to launch an investigation of the college sooner rather than later. The problem is... how do we do it? Who goes? Saint goes either way, his remotes are QEC-controlled, but who besides him?

Maurice, in person. OOCly, because that's the way we can earn level-ups on Hephaestus (discussed with PW in IRC back then), and ICly, because he's just that type of person. He's probably going to work in his Apocalypse lab in person as well, with the respect to necessary safety measures, of course.

Furthermore, I'd consider MMI-ing a science team and having their remotes go along... but now I remember that crossing the boundary to a pocket universe is possibly the only currently conceivable way to stop QEC-transmission (and even then it is unknown whether going in and out forever destabilises the synchronicity of QE, so in and out of itself it'd be an interesting experiment) so I am torn on the question of endangering the scientists by taking them in the flesh as well.

Also, we'd probably benefit from taking a number of sods with us, but for the reasons mentioned above they'll probably have to be delegated to Maurice. Because we don't know what we can encounter on the other side, from the experience of M6. Maybe give your PEWPEW assaultsuit a field run, or would it even fit through the rift (in M6, it probably wouldn't)?

And finally, the part I am struggling with the most, is what equipment we should take. A wide variety of sensors and scanners, probably, but what else? Because while exploration of such a place is promising (from the all the advancements the alien sand gave us), what I am really interested in is the nature of such rifts, with the intent of being able to replicate them in the aforementioned Apocalypse Lab. ((What? I said it's better be constructed somewhere far away from Hephaestus, just in case, because there's always a chance of slight scientific mistake :P ))

Just make all Hep personel go in person, so PW can make the ship have an 'unfortunate accident'. You'll make his day!

I have contingency plans in that case which I have already put in motion. Death is merely a setback from now on!

Yeah, don't mind me I've been slipping in and out of despondency for the past few weeks. Infatuation's flaring up again.

I'm not sure if you should level up for not going on a mission, even if you are there in virtuo.  Does Steve level up?

I think it was said before only people who go on the mission physically will get to level up, no?

That's what she (Piecewise) said. I think. Or at least accepted when someone brought the matter up.
