Getting Back into Dorf Fort

It's been around a solid 2 years since I really played DF and I've been getting the CRAVINGS again. I'm sure you all know the feeling.

So, what should I know about how to get back into the game? I remember the basics, in theory, but... yeah. I mean, I never even managed to penetrate an aquifer in the old days, or settle an evil place after the Evil biomes made it so you'll have piles of resurrecting bones and clouds of gaseous death on the surface.

if you haven't experienced mine tracks yet I advise it, they are sooo much fun. Especially if they cause unfortunate accidents.

Today I'd say it's a toss-up between going with 40.13 - which was pretty stable.  Or running the brand new 40.17 which was released today which has the new thoughts/emotions system, fruit harvesting, plus some important bug fixes for the 40.14-40.16 releases.

I'm thinking I might generate a new world using 40.17 this coming weekend - assuming the plant fix mod is updated as well as the rest of the tools in the LNP.

There's a ton of stuff since the 40._ releases, so you may want to know about the updated stuff like plant gathering, dwarven justice, grazing, hospitals, etc... the wiki would be a good place to start

Farming, hospital, etc. are up

Once a month, all the people who have been bitten by werebeavers transform in their fucking hospital beds

The way to deal with were-infections is to:

Put suspected infectees on lever-pulling duty.  Put a lever on /Repeat inside a 1x1 cell.  Then wall the infectees in.  Don't forget to give them a nickname so you can easily keep track of who might be infected.

Wait an in-game month to see who transforms.  Release the clean dwarves.

In the case of hospitals, you'll want to setup your hospitals with an easy way to isolate each wounded (and possibly infected) dwarf.

What do you do if one of your suspects gets bitten by one of the transforming dwarves? Or are you supposed to give them each a separate room?

Each potential victim should be isolated from the rest of the victims, as well as from the rest of the population. Also, you don't really have to lock them in a whole month, as long as you make sure they are contained before the next full moon. Also make sure you don't try to lock them in, as weres are supposed to be building destroyers, so the options are to wall them in or lock them in with drawbridges.

Pandar: look up the double-slit method on the dwarf fortress wiki, it's the way I breach aquifers.

Ouch... werebeasts... remember that werebeasts are building destroyers, so having separate hospital rooms isn't as viable.  On the other hand, if you just lock them in for a month, they'll heal themselves and you can proceed with other plans for disposal or usage.

So I have embarked now on three or four aquifers so far and every single time I find a way around it.

I am starting to think I am never going to be forced to cut through an aquifer at all.

For hospitals, I now go with a "finger" style.  Central 4-wide room with 1x4 rooms leading off of it.  The bed / table / traction bench are within each 1x4 finger room with a door.  Lock the door, then order a 3x1 wall built to block egress from the room.
