One of the most expensive things you'll ever get is metal objects, and even basic gold crafts can buy a steel one on a 4 to 1 tradeoff.

Mugs (goblets) are good ones to make, because you get the same item out each time and they go into a finished goods stockpile / bin. They are just so much easier to manage than the random crap from 'crafts'

It's a lot easier to flag bins full of "mugs" for trade than 50 other random items. Even "toys" aren't just called that, you have to find mini-forges and such BS.

Just do the mugs.

Not really. It's the exact same thing, finished goods are all trade goods.

They may be, but it far easier to type "mugs" into the filter when selecting goods to move to the depot than have to recall what each type of misc craft is called.

Rock mugs do tend to be my default trade good early on. Wooden wheelbarrows sometimes get used as a trade good for surface forts in heavily forested areas. Metal becomes more common in use for trade items as the fort ages and stockpiles of ore accrue. On occasion when I've managed to obtain legendary Dyers, Weavers and Clothiers along with Giant Cave Spider silk production, masterfully dyed, masterfully woven, masterfully crafted giant cave spider silk cloaks(yay for stacking multipliers) prove quite valuable in trade.

??? I am confused yet again how this is a problem. Either go to the finished goods tab, or the bins tab, where they'll already be there for you.

One reason to QSP instead of using bins is for things like "x(socks)x".  Because stockpiles have no way to filter based on wear level.  So I tend to keep all clothing that can wear out by the trade depot using QSPs, then I just select anything with a 'x' in the name when the trade caravan arrives on the map.

Now that there makes sense. And that should be a stockpile option, wear. But if you were using a QSP for trade goods, you'd just be slowing yourself down a lot. Clothes, though, are a perfectly reasonable trade good to be kept out of bins.

Mechanisms and cooked lavish meals, although those are also a tad cheaty. For the most "legitimate" way to buy out caravans, stone mugs or crafts. Mine stone. Have a stonecrafter. Set "Make stone crafts/mugs" on repeat. Profit[Literally]. Using gold for trade always felt like a waste to me, personally. I usually save it for noble's rooms.

Gold is almost as common as copper, though. And then there's tetrahydrite, which can be turned into billon for a lot of profit.

even basic gold crafts can buy a steel one on a 4 to 1 tradeoff.

Nope. Gold and steel have the exact same material modifiers, meaning equivalent crafts will have equal value.

I just have all the crafts and trap parts in one stockpile that bins are enabled for. (in my current fort I am not trying to do it the hard way, but I am using gold crafts as well, because the income is nice.)

I haven't had any nobles get weird about any craft types yet, though recently my mayor commissioned crowns, so who knows.
