I get masterwork platinum crafts covered in bone, cloth, metal, and gems/stones worth 60k+ each.

Well because currently the merchants will buy any kind of junks.
You can even sell a bin full of worn-out clothes (legendary items can still be expensive even if they are worn) and still make them happy.

Urist McBroker: Greetings, Master Human, this pair of socks have quite a history. My grand-grand-grandpa, Urist McLegendary the Troll Killer once wore them. I think it worths three thousands.
(Bring up the socks, a swarm of flies fall and die)
Human Merchants: No way! I won't pay more than three hundreds for...
Urist McBroker: Ah, yes. Then three hundreds. Take it, it is a discount for you, my old friend.

Personally I don't like cheating, but if the game allows it, I usually can't help.  :P For example, I only sell prepared food barrels after I found out they are ridiculously expensive. After all, the first caravans usually don't bring many goods.

Yup, prices dont quite reflect anything in particular.  I wish economies would present themselves (and trade agreements rely upon mandate or shortages), but the world isnt there yet.

So keep selling those spiked wooden balls and and worn clothing, and merchants will keep pretending like they can sell them at the next fort they go to.

The problem I have is GETTING all my damn crafts to the trading post in time. How do.

The easy answer is mine cart stops + quantum stockpiles.  Create a 5x1 stockpile that feeds to a minecart parked on a track stop that auto-dumps into a second 1x1 stockpile (that only takes from links).  Have the 1x1 stockpile right next to the trade depot.

When the caravan hits the map edge, pause the game and mark everything within 1 tile of the trade depot to be hauled to the depot.

The non-QSP (quantum stockpile) solution involves bins on the floor(s) above/below the trade depot containing only the goods that you want to trade away.  Bin hauling is faster then hauling 10-30 individual items across multiple floors.

No, a bin stockpile directly beside it. The quantum stockpile, in this situation, is actually really slowing you down.

I just set repeat on the craftsdwarf workshop for crafts and trinkets of whatever I have a lot of, which in the fortress I'm running now is pond turtle shell, bones, and wood. Then keep the crafts in a stockpile with bins next to the trade depot... Also selling the breedstock after I've gotten a tame populace of animals as well as the rotting clothes left behind when my dwarves grab the new suits that are being produced... If I do send off anything super valuable like prepared food barrels, I usually send it as an offering instead of using it to buy things, and that's usually because I want to clear up some space in the stockpiles (and taunt the mountainhome about how poor they are compared to my fortress)...

Also, "exploit" and "cheating" are different, cheating involves modifying the game itself to make things easier, while exploits are just things people consider overpowered. Personally, I find the idea of genning a world with more than "sparse" ore generation to be lame, but you probably won't find anyone else who agrees with that.

In game terms, the trade thing is generally fine, it would kinda suck if you accidentally got a berserk dwarf because you didn't make enough rock mugs in advance to buy the gems the moody dwarf is asking for early on, but I understand why people don't like the unbalancedness of it when they've been fortressing for awhile... I can't wait for the day there's a real economy, if only to see how many people get annoyed at all the bearded drunks in their trade simulator.

Wait, can't you make something to drop the bins you want to trade onto the trade depot, then when someone shows up you only need a dwarf to come and trade it?

No, you can't send stuff to the trade depot until the traders arrive on the map...

But you could dump the stuff there, then no-one would need to haul it.

It still needs a haul job for each bin to move it inside the depot building, once the traders arrive. It'll just be faster to complete as they don't need to move from the spot they pick it up from.

I just enabled bins for only my crafts stockpile.

Man I get nothing for these things.

I decided to give a 2x2 embark a try also and have set up some defenses for the coming gobbos.

I have access to magma, but my supply of iron seems a bit sparse. I have lots of other metals though so I can just make like copper weapons or something. Or metal crafts of some sort. It is certainly a lot tougher.

You need to have patience. Ten masterwork gold crafts easily buy everything you need.

so I sold some ho hum gold crafts and each was worth 1500. So assuming I have gold on the map I am okay, but with less valuable metals...

Man I didn't even think about making metal trap components on the games where I sell those. (all but 1) I could just buy whatever I wanted.

If you don't want to sell wooden trap components, there is always wodden corkscrews or wheelburrows.

But I typically just setup 2 or 3 crafts and make streams of rock crafts.  What could the merchants have that you could possibly want?

The only time I ever needed traders, was because on a few starts there were no trees and needing to buy wood.  I sorta wish I could just start all my games in mountains, but not allowed to embark on that.  :(
