Empire of Arms: Weapon Design Interest Check and OOC
« on: November 18, 2014, 06:14:22 pm »

Well, we all know weapon design games. Often, they are fun. Everyone works together (and against each other) to design the best equipment. Well, that often means that some of your best ideas are ignored/unused, drowned by a sea of other ideas and opinions. Wouldn't it also be fun to work directly against each other?

Empire of Arms is just that! In this game, you will play an Arms Dealer organization, headed by you and you alone. Make the best weapons, sell the to the warring countries for profit, which you then use to make more weapons. A great cycle. Other people will, no doubt, attempt to take over your market, or worse, deal with enemies of the people you are supplying, wiping them out.

Ripped off from Inspired by several other forum games, and hoping for input on how it should be run. Currently, it is set in realistic modern day-analog. An alternate world where the world is almost constantly at war, with many countries armies being replaced by private corporations. This would allow you to build an "empire", outfitting your own troops to defend supplies or take other actions, even leading to direct warfare with other players!

It will be turned based, with one turn a day completely at random. I hope this will keep me updating it, to avoid dying. Other than that, the game should be shaped by those who play it. If this has some interest, I will probably start it up Monday/Over the Weakened. This weak is busy for me, I should probably be studying math even now.

Im most certainly in as long as this game runs at a reasonably slow pace for me to keep up as in there is like a turn every other day at the quickest to give me time to think and formulate as i am not the brightest man it takes me a while to design anything competently. But yes count me in. Also if possible i would like to reserve a spot for this game presently.

Well it looks like there is enough interest for me to start making the rules. Any questions or comments before I begin? I think I will start the game some time Monday.

Currently, I am planning on making a AU modern world, one with the technologies of our world but a completely different political atmosphere. Plenty of small countries fighting each other constantly, letting you easily make some money and deploy mercenaries without getting in the way of large countries.

I was kind of hoping for more input on the setting, if you have any ideas.

Real world, unless we have a bunch of people yearning for something else. Realistic physics, chemistry, and weapon design, to the best I can manage.

If your keeping it in the real world then consider setting it in the resent past,
modern day is hard as every thing has most of it details classified unlike older eras.
Heres some ideas as too alternate eras
I.E. A early 50's post ww2 setting where europe fell apart into warring states.

Or in the cold war a small war flares up that destabilizes an area that leads to a dozen or so fractions fighting each other.
Time wise that covers 1945 to 90 and lets you pick where the game is set.

I'm ok with it being set in the real world and the modern, but note that lets us have a lot of odd weapons and once failed ideas.
Take mech suits, at first there easy to rule as a silly piece of science fiction but then you look closer at Project Hardiman, at the Hybrid Assistive Limb and the idea of a working mech suit is a reality.

About the only thing similar to the real world would be the technology and physics. The general idea is that a lot of militaries have "gone corporate", became private organizations. That lets Arms Dealers have a lot of classified stuff, build up their own armies, etc. WWII never happened, because England, Germany, America, Russia, etc never existed in this world. The history, geography, countries, etc are unrelated to our world. Of course, they use similar weapons and technology developed in the exact same way, but that can be hand waved.

I could always just set it in the real world if everyone liked that better, at any time post-gunpowder. Pre-gunpowder is boring.

Part of everyone having direct control over their company is to have a bunch of failed ideas!

Well, they are real. And attempting the would turn out almost exactly like that. You must remember that was when the US government was throwing money around like it was on fire to beat the Commies, the same time the blasphemous "gyrojet" was designed. A small (starting out) arms dealer company could attempt that, but would have to spend millions in designs as they had. Then they would have to convince warlords that this expensive, hard to maintain, and unique suite was somehow worth it. Then they would have to actually produce them.

In practice, players are fully capable of making weird "sci-fi" style things, nobody is going to stop you from trying. But they will only work as well as they would in real life, they will be more expensive, and finally nobody wants to buy weird untested things when they are in the middle of an expensive war. You can design all the skyscraper sized tanks you want, but nobody is going to want to field that thing, it would be a logistics nightmare, and only the richest countries could even spend the money on it.
