I've had some success learning DF through strict population controls.  It is much easier to practice and learn things if I don't have to worry about anything fun happening.

I found a few magic numbers in the various docs, but there seem to be more.  Keeping the population cap below 20 prevents goblins, and somewhere above 7 seems to allow kobolds, but I haven't nailed down exactly when kobolds appear, other than that 7 appears to be kobold-safe.  Low population also seems to prevent moods, but again, I'm not sure where.  At some point the justice system activates, and that seems to be a mid to high population event, but I don't know where.

Is there any definitive list of which features open up at which population level?  Do babies count, or just adults?

I'm pretty sure it's on the wiki but someone will come along and tell you where exactly since I am not sure.

Justice system comes in when you get big enough for a mayor. Then you get a sheriff and a hammerer. I don't know when that it, it doesn't require too many people though.

Details for getting a metropolis and getting the Queen in your settlement/becoming the mountainhome aren't known down to exact numbers I think.

I think sieges open at 80, and you get a mayor at 50.

If you don't want Fun of the euphemistic variety happening, you could also turn invasions off in the d_init like me, but I'm pretty much just a big pussy who's mortally afraid of boogerskins goblins.

They are rough, I am just now wading into them again and I was never very good at them.

But waiting around for titans and forgotten beasts to show up gets boring tbh. Eventually the random abilities and traits of those beasts are going to be something you won't be able to beat. It's just a matter of time. But you could feasibly wipe out the entire goblin civ if you held up to enough sieges.

If your fortress has below 80 population you can still experience bandit sieges and ambushes.

These kind of special events rely more on how much wealth your fortress produces. Thieves and whatever else will show up if they find out your fortress is creating a lot of nice stuff.

The justice system depends on if you have a sheriff or captain of the guard.

If you're not producing and exporting wealth, expect to have a boring game.

Seconded. Just had a kobold appear beside my newly crippled (alligators suck) future-ruler of the empire.
