Once you've taken their equipment, there's loads of things you can do with goblins, from simply pitting them into a weapon trap, throwing them off a 30 z level drop to a gorey demise (bonus points for having them land in the middle of your dining room), drop them into a room where your soldiers can train by fighting them, use them to test out your various death traps...

Or just drop them outside and watch them flee in naked terror if you're feeling merciful...

One trick is to make an animal stockpile that only accepts goblins, and build pits with hatches right in the middle of the thing. Set the goblin stockpile to take input links from your main animal stockpile.

So you can strip them of goods using the mass dumping trick (designate the entire area for dumping, then unselect the cages themselves), then pit them straight into an arena or barracks area right below the cages. There's no need to build the cages or anything this way, or use chains or anything, and because of the hatch covers, the workers shouldn't get spooked by the goblins, or fall into the pit. Also, every cage is next to a pit. This helps if you use the method to pit zombies (zombies could be the disposal method for the goblins too). But have a squad on call on the top level when doing this, because I've had undead escape when being pitted. I don't think non-undead can escape though.

What I'm going to do is pit them into a tunnel area next to carved fortifications, with my marksdwarves on the other side to pick them off.

Does this seem like the most efficient use of them for practice?

If you're using them for target practice, be aware that there's a bug that lets creatures pass through fortifications (had fun finding that one out on my own). Best to chain them instead of just releasing them.

ooh thank you? Is that for carved fortifications as well? I thought it was only for constructed ones.

Now that you mention it, it might be constructed only. But I'd say better safe than sorry and use chains anyway.

If you want to be really safe about it, build/carve the fortifications a z level above the area the goblins will be in, your archers can fire down, but they can't walk up and through (I don't know if this actually works, I haven't faced the bug yet, but it's what I would do in this situation)

well they will be unarmed so I assume that would just be free hammerdwarf skill ups if they climb through.

But an upper z level might be a better option.

If not, I might get some practice for my surgeons.
