captured goblins

okay so I survived the second goblin siege of my fort. It was rough because I had just nearly lost everyone to a hill titan, but my cage traps saved the day.

Now I have all these goblins in cages. I want to move them to my atom smasher after stripping their gear.

How would I go about doing that without letting them loose to kill my people?

(d)esignate (b)lock area and (f)ump and (f)orbid all the crap in your cage area.

Then, go to your stockpile and undump and unforbid your cages and other stuff you dont want to dump.  Then unforbid their gear, which is not conveniently forbidden and marked for dumping.

I rechecked my original post, it was done right before a surprise exam (one I forgot about) so it was rushed.

Just strip them of their weapons and then send them to the training arena.

once I have taken their stuff, then what? Can I just set up the cages in the atom smasher and smash those or what is the best way to get them into the involved pit?

I'd pit them in a room with a bridge off to one side.  Its less broked now.

If you're unsure of that, than you could just crush their cages.
Or chain them and shoot them.  Or any number of things.

They should.  Just keep in mind that BDs can and will BD objects within reach while chained up.  And I had a few chained animals attack one another.

hmm I followed the instructions but my dwarves dumped nothing. Oddly enough I designated a barrel accidentally too, and then undesignated it and they dumped all the fish in it so I am pretty sure I did it correctly

You have to <c>laim the goblins first. When they arrive it's all forbidden, so dwarves don't try to stockpile invaders' weapons. The forbiddenness of the equipment continues to keep you from dumping it so it's <d-b-c> then <d-b-d> then, while paused, <k-d> each cage to have dwarves strip equipment without unleashing angry naked goblins.

Alternatively, I like to find a dwarf that likes grates and groom him to become a carpenter. Then when he moods, I have a nice indestructible wooden grate. Build the grate at the bottom of a smooth shaft, carve out a room beneath it, link the grate to a lever, stick a floor hatch above, set the grate on fire with magma; and you have yourself a goblinite processor. Just drop them through the hatch onto the burning hell-grate and wait until only metals remain, then pull the lever and collect your spoils. As a bonus, it's a convoluted enough set-up and horrific enough way to die that any metals procured in this fashion are guaranteed to raise your dwarf cred by at least 20% per goblinite bar.

I'm putting this on my list of Guides to do.  So many people ask about it...  I'll work on it after I finish Stockpiles part 3.

An even better proposition: if you can get magma, or a magma piston going, with a magma-safe grate or two you can get a semi-automated goblinite smelting chamber worked out, that does virtually all of the work for you (including disposal of all the troll fur clothes and other organic waste byproducts), and if you're careful with how much magma gets pumped in, it even leaves the non-magma-safe weapons and armor, most of the time. The weapons and armor are left sparkling, shiny, and completely clean of organic goblinite waste byproduct, ready to be set for claiming (<d-b-c>) and mass-melting (<d-b-m>). Works best with wood cages.
