Perhaps. Perhaps.

((Just curious, which side are you supporting Culise? Asking, because I'm pretty sure you're gonna go World Police mode on me.))

Neither, yet.  I just don't want people lopping off chunks for themselves to work their way around my flanks.  ^_^
...
Though I suppose that depends on how long the civil war goes.  If they can't get their own house in order and it starts spilling over into neighboring countries like I fear it will, it might actually behoove its neighbors to take a more proactive stance just to lance the boil, so to speak.

Tariffs aren't thievery. >.>

And historically, trade taxes are where most nations made their money.

Not entirely certain why you're making less money, though. Unless you have export taxes?

Nope.  It explicitly said that the trade route just went down in income for me because of the tariffs you implemented, reducing my econ size.  Basically, while you're entirely correct about how most nations made their money pre-taxation, the practical effect is that you're taking extra money out of the Istanian-Serican trade system, which leaves less of it for me, and which leaves me with less incentive to maintain the trade route when I can get better value for my buck by shopping around.  Honestly, the only reason I'm opting for reciprocal tariffs rather than accepting Taricus' offer right away is because he was spying on me, and because you're opposed to him.  That and I won't get as much money with a military good like copper compared to an economic good such as that which is presently being traded.

Besides, as they say, sauce that's good for the goose is good for the gander.  If tariffs are perfectly fine, why be bothered by me implementing one or two of my own? :P

EDIT:
Oh, also, the stealing jibe was just a bit of a joke at my own expense.  As far as I know, no one's even did, or is doing the latter two yet.

I wasn't doing it to try and steal money from you, like I said. I was doing it to try and increase native industry. Adding extra tariffs will, in all likelihood, just decrease overall trade between us, so that nobody's making as much money.

And yeah, Gold will probably give you a bit more, even with tariffs, than copper will.

*shrug*
Prisoner's dilemma.  Even if absolute trade is lower, it should hurt me less than to maintain the present situation, and the unstable equilibrium that was the optimum condition has already been broken.  I see no reason not to act accordingly.

...How much is it hurting you?

I mean, my total economic prosperity or whatever value is like 4000, and I only gained like 18. If it's hurting you so much that you're willing to put this much effort into it, you could just ask me to remove the Tariff.

I don't think you've actually asked that once, just been kinda passive aggressively saying you'll add your own tariff. >.>

I lost 18, so the loss was equivalent to your gain.

As for asking to have it removed, my assumption was that you went in knowing exactly how tariffs would work and chose to do it anyways; it's the reason I haven't been raising income via tariffs myself.  Simply asking nicely wouldn't have helped in such a circumstance.  Besides, a reciprocal tariff would either lead to it balancing out without having to bother you with the matter or to a mild net reduction to both of us, in which case we could have discussed it next turn.

RPgeek, there's one little bit in regards to the trade goods you missed. While copper is less valuable on it's own, Serica also has tin. Getting copper means they have access to a lot more raw materials for military purposes and such.

...It doesn't even make sense that you would lose 18.

I gained 12 from the tariff itself, it said, and six from domestic industry.

The hell.

Ah, in that case it makes sense.  The difference of 6 is the efficiency losses - traders that can't pay the tariffs and stop trading, for instance.  I was a little curious about that.

...You know, I'm surprised the two are you are banging on about 20 odd points of prosperity when you get around several hundred every few turns.
