Hmm I hadn't even thought of that.

That's not something I can test until the time comes either.

Perhaps there's a better option like forbidden hatch covers or something? :/ There won't be much I can do if the bridge deconstructs under the whales.

You should check out these two threads by the DF ocean master known as Sphalerite:

On the topic of increasing the spawn chance for  sea creatures he says:

Quote
Creatures don’t seem to spawn from sea biomes with the same frequency as land biomes.  In any embark site there are a limit on the number of groups of animals which can be on the map at once.  For some reason, the game greatly preferred to present me with land animals.  I would hardly ever see any creatures in the sea, far more often I’d have a few groundhogs or something equally useless on the land instead.  Rather than spending years exterminating the land life, I built single tile raising bridges all around the edge of the map and raised them to make map-edge walls.  With no available surface tiles to spawn on, only ocean creatures spawned.

yea someone suggested that and I like it, I am just wondering if it will inhibit caravans, assuming I leave one space open on each side. But then the animals will spawn, so it seems best if I am entirely self-reliant. But not having anything going on but the whales would get pretty stale. I mean, I want goblins and possibly to become the mountainhome etc.

That's the glory of the bridges: you get the best of both worlds.  You can raise them when you want whales, and lower them when you want other things.

Also, flying creatures MAY still be a problem, I think they can spawn above said bridges.

hmm I would have to pay exceedingly close attention to the dates to lower them at the right time. I guess I could just lower them in autumn for the dwarves to come through, but the goblins don't announce themselves before showing up. :/

My suggestion was actually this: get your whales, then open the "gates".  That way, you can have your cake and eat it too, though it may take a couple of years.

Yea, that seems like the best route.

I am working off a 2x2 embark for maximum amount of time before the fort inevitably dies of fps loss (I lose a lot of forts that way.) On a pocket island. The water, of course, will hasten that though.

At least it will be easier to construct the bridges, though.

If you're on an island with no neighbors, I don't believe you will get caravans or sieges.

the entire world is an island, there are a few civs on it.

Plus I heard you always get the dwarven caravan now.

okay hopefully people will still pay attention to this and give me advice.

There is the chance any retractable bridge built will deconstruct when I try to retract it to drop GSWs into the lower tank. I have experimented with hatch covers, and neither cages not bridges can be placed on them for any sort of release mechanism.

I do need a two layer tank, but they need to be able to be separated. Is there a quick way to test if a GSW submerged in water will deconstruct a retractable bridge. The only thing that makes me think maybe they won't is because they are in water.

I have lined the land areas with bridges and am constructing mechanism on repeat to hook them all up to one lever. One problem is ramps at the very edge of the map can't be smoothed and can't have a bridge retract up on their side. This may allow animals in... I have tried to mitigate the problem, however.

The main issue is, there will be points when I need the whales swimming free, so they can breed. Then when a baby is born I need to retrap them so I can take the baby out of the trap and air drown it. Although letting the baby grow to adult first would be fun but that could take awhile. The upper tank is where they are released via lever, the lower tank is where they are captured and re-captured.

Retracting bridges don't deconstruct due to too much weight; they just won't retract.

The quickest way to test whether or not a GSW will prevent a bridge from retracting, I think, would be to make a throwaway test world with rocs modded [PET][COMMON_DOMESTIC]. Buy a roc, pasture it on a bridge, see if the bridge will retract.

Adding onto that, if you wanted to see whether water makes a difference you can use DFHack to fill one or more tiles with water instead of doing a bunch of extra engineering to get your bridge submerged.

Regarding your map borders, you should be able to build walls in the spots you can't build bridges.

Wrong.  Walls cannot be built within five tiles of the edge of the map.

Huh. Well if all else fails DFHack can create walls, too.
