hmm so I would have to release them, how would I do that?

How much time do I have before they air drown? I could release them, then flood the chamber, but that seems really tricky. Otherwise they are going to be in separate cages and I don't think whales can breed by osmosis.

Best way is with levered cages, or build the cage right next to a pit with water.

If you don't want your breeding chamber cluttered with random cages, just build your cage right next to a pit with your flooded breeding chamber below.  Order the animal to be pitted and hope the dwarf doesn't dally tossing the animal in.

ahh levered cages, of course.

So let's say I have a level to work with, and I build locks along the coast. I floodgate all of them. Will I lower the level of water in the ocean by flooding these?

How best would I drain them? Perhaps into the aquifer?

An aquifer is convenient, yes. Another good option is just a tunnel down to a lower level which then goes off the edge of the map somewhere. You can't dig the last tile at the edge of the map, but you can smooth and then carve fortifications into it, allowing edge of map drainpipes that drain water very quickly. Throw in some hatches or bridges, then close locks, and open the path down to the drainpipe level to allow access to sealife caught in your cages.

Another tip: you may want to build some bridges over the top of your trenches along the coast, otherwise waves splash into them and get really annoying with all the job cancellation spam as you attempt to link up your bridges and build the traps, etc.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

No, the level of the ocean will only go down if you connect it directly to a drain of a level below the level below the surface (IE, if you create a pressurized drain).  Depending on your aquifer level, it could be feasible to accidentally create a pressurized drain into it. So take care there.  But just a lock that connects to and from the ocean will only briefly reduce the water because of flow.  It'll be replenished by the map edge.

Aquifer would be a great drain.  As I mentioned, be careful to keep the path interrupted, otherwise you'll drop the level of water down to just equal to the level of the aquifer.  But then again, maybe you'd want to do that.  There are applications to being able to do that at will.

I've got maybe one or two levels to work with, the aquifer starts pretty early. The ocean itself goes down about 3 levels,

Also, unless it got fixed, if you kill an animal trainer's entire group of friends and family, they may continue their job even when they're dead. As ghosts, they'll train animals even when they have to go into water to get to them. Long story short, one type of ghost haunts those that were it's relations in life, and without access to those relations, they'll default to whatever their job was before they died (if possible). It works best on new migrants, due to the fact that they usually haven't formed relations with your fort's dorfs, so you can set a trap that you can activate to kill all migrants that try to enter your fort.

I don't know how feasible my plan will be if I even see a giant whale. I was decimated by a hill titan, then got beaten down some more by a second goblin siege. I'm still burying the dead and my fps has dropped a lot.

Any advice on getting my fps back up there. I love it when the fort is new and everything is at a racing pace. Everything is crawling right now.

also something I am trying to figure out. Let's say I have two containment areas, one with traps and one without. I catch the whales then drain the water and set up levers for the cages etc in the non-trapped room. Then I release the whales. They breed, and then what? How will I get the babies into cages or possibly move the whales into a different containment area with traps? do I just open a floodgate and then hope they swim in that direction?

I would build your flooded breeding chamber on top of a bridge set to retract.  Below that have a room filled with cage traps.  Open the bridge and the water and whales will fall down into the trap room. At that point many of them will get trapped, and anything not trapped will eventually wander into them.  Once everything is trapped, drain the water from the trap room, close the bridge and refill the top.

What invaders/wild animals are present?  And are you blocking you fortres using forbidden doors at all?

The most common cause of early-game FPS issues are Keas (or anything else, keas are just most common) getting blocked by a locked door.  That will tank your FPS big time.

And if you are using a locked door, you will also want to manually forbid everything that's outside, just in case the dwarves are trying to go pick it up.

1) Download dfhack.
2) Use autodump destroy to cheat all the random junk crap away.

This is not really even cheating in any sense, since you're only REMOVING resources for yourself, and the only reason why you're doing so is for technical meta game reasons. There would be no in-universe role playing reason for dwarves to waste months of time collecting garbage outside just to atom smash it, because the real universe doesn't get laggy when more pants are lying around...

Also you could consider trying a smaller embark -- less lag threat plus less time spent digging your coastal trenches anyway. If you weren't already starting on a 2x2 or similar, it might be worth it just to restart on one.

I'd say tamed whales are very difficult: they will most likely air drown while trying to get to your meeting area. You can't make underwater pastures, though I don't know if flooding a pasture zone would make it invalid. SCIENCE is required on that topic. Pitting/ponding a wild whale is going to be tricky too, as their weight makes them so slow to haul that they will air-drown before the dwarf can take two steps.

Wild whales in a contained area, now those are a different issue altogether. If tamed in a cage for butchering, they can air drown while being hauled and become unbutcherable. If they remain wild they may need to be killed to qualify for butchering.

I checked the wiki and I don't think they can actually be tamed. The bridge idea is excellent. I would need to make a number of these chambers to be assured the best chance to catching these whales.

No dfhack for 40.16 yet sadly.

Lots of Keas but no forbidden doors.

I have an atom smasher but my dwarves have gone into this mode where they are hauling any and everything since the titan attack. I'm really worried my plan will fizzle before I can achieve it simply due to fps.

Okay I am building the tanks now. There are two levels. Both below the sea. The lower level will have a floodgate to open out to the sea.

Can I build a large stairway next to the lower level and use a screwpump to drain that water into the aquifer? Or will the screwpump not work since it will be dropping the water down to lower levels?

Perhaps I could just use secondary floodgates, in that case would a drop to the aquifer level drain the water from the tank?

Can my bridge be built without supporting floors if it is surrounded by natural walls and there is a staircase next to where it needs to be built?

If both levels of the tank are drained, and I open the gate on the bottom tank and the bridge floor is up, will it fill both levels since they are both below the surface of the sea itself?

aand the aquifer is on the very first level apparently. Hmm this is going to be much much trickier than I thought.
