Having the occasional dwarf fall into a downward depression spiral that no amount of masterwork statues can bring them out of actually sounds both interesting and somewhat realistic to me, as long as it only happens occasionally with dwarves whose personalities make them susceptible to it.

@taptap: Does it matter if refuse rots, as long as no miasma affects anyone? My pile is "outdoors" (enclosed courtyard), which seems to completely block miasma generation.

Afaik, they get the "witnessing death" thoughts just by seeing old corpses (or unprocessed body parts such as skulls) every time they path by. As you can't process corpses of sentients this is a lot of stress in embarks facing animal men or goblins or even silly plump helmet men and troglodytes...

Ah, so THAT's why my depressed farmer claims to have seen the death this season of every invader ever coming to the fortress!
This means there is a need for a separate refuse pile for sentients, then, off in a corner somewhere (with an optional atom smashing cleaning device).

Personally I think that that is a bug.

Personally, I believe a bad thought from seeing random corpses in various stages of decomposition all over the place is quite appropriate. It can be handled with proper stockpile placement and magma funerals. It also induces you to choose dwarfier methods to clean up say a forgotten beast den (aka caverns) with hundreds of corpses still on the ground. Even irl knacker is/was a somewhat, say, odious profession.

Personally I keep my refuse pile right outside my doors, I like having the dwarves walk by it. It ups their discipline or weeds them out as weak links that need to be put in front of my well armored troops.

Isn't martial prowess, honor, etc, dwarven hallmarks? Just look at the glorious piles of vile slain enemies who were bent on destroying the dwarven ways!
What we need is skull totems of goblins, minotaurs, and Dragons, to decorate the halls with, and to inspire the young generation!

Ah well, I'll see if the newly installed atom smasher can take care of the bodies from the latest invasion (as well as make a dent in the backlog), but they're so slow at corpse hauling that they haven't yet cleaned up after the last invasion, so the poor enemies had to climb over the corpses of their older siblings.

My two depressing dwarves don't seem to care about non sentient corpses, though (forgotten beasts, cats, crundles).

I am impatiently awaiting my first goblin invasion. I have a lot of dwarves. I will be displaying the goblin corpses on a refuse bin just outside to expose my dwarves and raise their discipline. Dwarves that exhibit significant depression instead of a stiff upper lip will find themselves having an unfortunate accident.

It's all part of my dwarven eugenics program.

Kind of don't get how same person endorses gay marriage in one, eugenics in the next thread.  :o

Have you even tested, whether witnessing death trains discipline skill (and or hardens your dwarves) in the current version at all, and if so how fast? (This isn't my experience, but I had fb depleting cavern populations and goblins just don't make it to the fort.) At any rate if you actually value discipline you can train it a lot faster and with happy thoughts by setting up a little reserve training for your dwarves.

I also murder dwarves and cats regularly in game. DF != RL.

I think this thread has explained to my why my broker, who was unhappy that it rained on him at the trading depot, subsequently sat there for nearly a year and didn't move.  I was beginning to think the lack of food, drink and sleep meant he was a vampire (I haven't had one yet) but finally he moved inside and laid down on a bed.  I never did get to trade, they pulled up and left and came back the next year before he moved again, and he wouldn't go back to the trade depot!

I plan to build a wall around my garbage dump and keep the door to it locked most of the time.  What they can't see won't traumatize them.

I pretty much agree with it, however there is no brothel or tavern other than their dining room, which is legendary.  I would provide them with amusement park if I could, but I cannot (or I dont know)  Also, dwarf, as far as I know, should be pretty workaholic creature and shouldn't be bothered by the work as long there is booze.  But thats me.

Id like to add that I never been able to use a pump/waterfall/pipe of any sort, just cant figure out how it works :)
