has been under great deal of stress
« on: November 16, 2014, 04:20:08 pm »

Hi all,
I haven't been able to find much info on stress, but how do you make them less stressful?  There is no theater or comedy club... how do you make them more happy?

I hope it haven't been said anywhere else, because I haven't found anything :(

Thx!

well, there's some problems with stress right now, the emotions system changed and it's hard to keep dwarves happy.

Set up a meeting hall of some sort and decorate it in engraved walls and floors, fine statues, windows, other items that look pretty. Give them their own beds, make sure they have a well to drink from, as well as booze, make lavish meals.

Keep your leader free from duties so they have a shoulder to cry on or someone to scream at if it gets particularly bad.

Also, make sure their clothes don't rot off. Keep them in nice things.

yea my last fort was pretty successful for awhile, and the only reason everyone wasn't perpetually unhappy was because the fort served as a sort of revolving door of death. Half the pop would get killed, and a new batch would arrive all bright-eyed and bushy tailed.

The Duke was super happy though. But then, he had the best of everything and never even went in to battle.

Well not until that last fight. >__>

I've got one dwarf who's just getting unhappier and unhappier, despite having kept my mayor from working for a year or so by his constant meeting requests, so I've written the bugger off. I'm still on 0.40.15, though, as PyLNP hasn't caught up yet.
The unhappy dwarf claims to have seen every death that's occured since the fortress started during the last season, despite never having been near any of the combat deaths, and even Crundle deaths affect him (and I assume the massacre of the latest goblin invasion doesn't help). He also left councelling 3000 unhappier than going in, despite claiming to have gotten some satisfaction out of it.
Oh, he is happy at sleeping in a royal bedroom, realized his dream of mastering a skill, etc, but I guess he's just too soft for a dwarven fortress, and would only just hang on with the tree huggers.

My experience thus far (not a lot, only playing since a couple of weeks, currently on 40.16) is that even positive stuff can only slow down the downward spiral of some dwarfes, but never bring them back up to happiness.

I had one planter who was unhappy after seeing a death, then became "haggard and withdrawn" with all the tantrums etc... I gave her the best of everyting so her whole timeline was only positive stuff. On and on... Yet, she stayed depressed and kept throwing tantrums once in a while. To me, this is clearly a malfunction. Especially since she is starting to drag the others down as well with each tantrum...

My understanding is that Toady is well aware that the new mood system isn't working properly, and is working to fix it. Your dwarf is way further down the spiral than mine, since mine hasn't done anything than requesting meetings every few seconds, but if he starts actually misbehaving I'll have to send him to jail or into solitary confinement.

I had an administrator that was consistently having tantrums, killing war dogs and punching people.

He got in a fight with a kid and my engraver and they all got wounded.

Idiot doctor puts them side by side in the hospital, where they continued to brawl. Blood keeps spattering everywhere, doctors come in and clean them up and the floor tiles, they do it all over again.

The victims hadn't reported the crime yet so I couldn't jail the bastard.

I think I conscripted into one of my squads and he was killed, that or the dragon busting in on the workshop area finished him. It was hard to tell since a lot of dwarves just got melted by that thing.

Interesting!

I have been to the same conclusion : they never get happier if only for a little while.  Whatever I do, they never get back.

I've even saw my chief doctor wasting 2 + months trying to diagnose someone in the traction bench.

Anyway, it feels good to see that I'm not so bad :)

The diagnose thing is a bug, I believe. I've updated an outstanding bug report with my save (two doctors spent 3 months diagnosing the patient, and one got legendary at diagnosing, while the other one got really good). Eventually the patient recovered enough to get up and walk away. Interestingly enough, he was in a traction bench as well. I suspect a diagnose job was initiated when the patient should have been released from the bench. I'd recommend leaving a comment about your findings at the bug tracker.

Has anyone else tried a mist generator in the dining room?

Oddly enough, although the message for being near a waterfall is the same color as the thoughts for being satisfied at work or sleeping in a good bedroom (bright green), only the waterfall seemed to provide any tangible relief for stress in my case.  I'm thinking this is a bug and all of those thoughts are supposed to reduce stress, but would appreciate some confirmation that it actually works when the others don't.

As long as it isn't the missing relatives bug, you should be fine with waterfalls, customised furniture and removal of stressors (i.e. refuse hauling, miasma exposure, incomplete clothing). Also, take care where you place refuse stockpiles and better not let it rot away, but remove it forever (magmadump, atomsmash). I can't say anything about numbers, but things other than waterfalls do work.

Have you ever had a stressed dwarf, (red flashing down arrow) turn into a non-stressed dwarf?

Because I haven't. Even when I gave her an artifact throne and all exceptional steel furniture and statues in her bedroom.

Yes, one was sparring under a waterfall to recover. The other recovery (her lover) was freed of all potential stressors and got custom furniture but didn't really see waterfalls in the last phase of his recovery, but he took a long time, i.e. several years, to recover (very dour and greedy dwarf).
