Hi! I have this bug:

So I thought that it would be nice to be able to just quickly change "which key is the alt-key".
I would change my ALT key to be ALT GR instead. Which is currently Mode, whereas the key next to it is Menu, and both are recognized in Ubuntu (I can add bindings to those keys, but not to the ALT key, only ALT GR and MENU)

*addition* And then you can have one screen for "Basic Keys" which is the keys that subsequently will be used in the following setup. The keys like ALT GR and MENU could just be added to the list of keys that let you shift into another mode. That would be useful, rather than fixing the ALT key for Ubuntu 14 (because I believe it is just a question of changing how Ubuntu handles the ALT key when you press it).

I found out that the encoding for keypresses in DF is based on a sum of 1, 2 and/or 4. The amount of different keypresses would be 8, such as CTRL + ALT + SHIFT being one of them. I think it might be low on the list to change the system for key bindings. Is there a way to change which keyboard location is the ALT key?

I haven't had problems with "Alt" on Ubuntu. The majority of modifier handling is done by SDL, not DF, so it's most likely a problem with SDL or your system's keyboard layout.

Thanks for the reply, I will look into changing the KB layout.

Changing the hot keys did not work, I will have to install a program for changing the KB layout. Some programs open up the top bar menu when you press alt, so I guess I could try disabling that.

I tried using keyboard input programs to use alt combinations but they just default to non-alt presses as per http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=6088 since not even the virtual keyboard is recognized.

Ubuntu automatically starts some kind of weird "alt enters the menu" kind of feature. I think that i I change the window manager it will work better. I just have to figure out how. *edit* it worked, I installed XUbuntu and alt works fine.
