Bridge questions
« on: November 15, 2014, 04:35:07 pm »

1. Can dwarves walk on top of a raised bridge (like you can walk on top of a wall)?
2. Does a ramp next to a raised bridge act like a ramp next to a wall (e.g. you can walk up the ramp to the  next z level up)?

While we are at it, I can't seem to get raised bridges to create the nigh impenetrable barrier for my fort that they are supposed to create. Everyone and everything just walks through the area no problem.

I had that problem once. I think they were climbing through the diagonal.

Extending the roof one tile more stopped it.

I didn't check closely though. It might have been something else.

I don't understand how the roof would do that, isn't the bridge wall always one z axis high? And these were dwarves just walking casually through the middle of the walkway where the bridge was raised and right past the barrier it was supposed to create. The bridge spanned the width of the walk.

I don't KNOW, but I suspect raised bridges work the same way as built fortifications, i.e. they don't have any floor tile on top, and they do let things in from above (liquids and flyers), unless you block the access with a floor (or wall) on the level above.
You could consider a bridge to be thin, i.e. less than a full tile in thickness. This would logically explain why there would be an enterable gap on top when raised.

Bridges do not create a floor tile atop themself, otherwise you couldnt build a floor tile atop a bridge yourself.
There's your weakpoint.

ooh wait, so I have to build a floor tile on the same z level as the bridge?

No, you have to build a floor tile on the level above the bridge, straight above it.

@Astrid: I'll have to dispute that logic (but not the conclusion), as you can build a floor tile on top of a wall. Inherent floor does not block constructed floor on top (which is very good when you want to put a floor on top of the ground or on top of stone...).

there is a natural floor above the bridge on the next z axis up. The bridges themselves are completely inside.

Huh. Maybe you should put a save file up. The only thing I can think is that your bridge is actually down when you think it's up. :P (Can happen easily if your bridge is only one tile wide).

the bridge is pretty big. All the forts with said bridges are retired or have fallen. I didn't even bother with it in this one because it doesn't work. However, I will build one when I get a chance to show you the problem.

And I assume the bridges are actually closing, rather than retracting?

that is a good question. How does one make a retracting bridge? I assumed they were all drawbridges by default.

Nope, and that might be the problem. They are all retracting by default.
When creating the bridge, you define the direction in which it is to raise (WASDX, where S restores it to retracting). Unfortunately, it's not possible to see after construction, so I generally test my lever to see both that I've hooked it up to the correct bridge, and that the bridge itself behaves as intended (keep everyone away when doing that, or you may inadvertently get a case of dwarf throwing).
There is a little symbol on top of the construction pane showing the direction the bridge draws in.
As ptb_ptb says, a single tile long bridge looks the same regardless of whether it's up or down, so I usually make them at least two tiles long, even when it would be better technically with a single tile.

wow that explains so much, my last fort might have survived if I had known that. I even had three bridges linked to one lever there, for all the good it did.

Thanks.

Question though. My current fort is just stairs downwards atm, if I place a retracting bridge overtop the stairs and actually have it cover the stairs when my dwarves are hiding, can it be destroyed? If so, what is a preferable way to fix this problem. I figured the bridge thing just didn't work so skipped building in a manner that would accommodate it.
