How to kill vampires in adventure mode in DF2014?

I just started an adventure game in v0.40.16 and am trying to kill a vampire.
found him, accused him, he admitted it but unlike in DF2014 he doesn't attack.
if I attack him people think I'm the bad guy and start fighting me.

I'd suggest just quick picking his head. Who cares if one/two/three villages/kingdoms hate you?

hm I will try that. at first I also killed the villagers who attacked me but surrounding villages immediately found out about that so I was hated there too.
but killing the vampire and asking them to cease hostilities could work.

is there a reason why vampires don't attack anymore when accused or is this a bug?

Hostility is a hit and miss with DF 2014.

Try spreading rumors about him being a vampire after accusing him.  Also try spitting on him :)

gonna try spreading rumors next time I pass through a vampire village.

it seems vampires now flee when attacked, so I attacked one with sheathed weapons which means his friends didn't attack me, ran outside and waited for him.
however, when I <brag> about killing him and then ask about his locations people keep telling me to look in his cottage. when I <summarize> the kill they spit at me and call me a killer.
is the new game mechanics now to only expose vampires and not kill them or is it just another bug?
I also noticed the difficulty is ridiculously low now, e.g. bandit camps are just a bunch of wrestlers idling around and watching me kill their weak leader. do enemies get stronger and vampires fight back once I'm more famous?

Necromancer towers are still pretty though
