GIVEAWAY - Xenonauts
« on: November 14, 2014, 03:43:05 pm »

This be good game. Me likey. You likey? You want? http://www.xenonauts.com

So I've won a couple of games from giveaways on this forum when I was out of work. I thought it might be time to give back now that my economic situation is loads better. Xenonauts is currently at discount on GoG. So if you are not feeling cheap, go there and grab it. If you are feeling cheap or out of money, you can get a free copy from this thread.

Rules of the giveaway:
* Tell us how Urist McToady, the new Xenonauts recruit, dies on his first mission.
* No Escaped Lunatics, sowwy.
* I'll choose the most awesome answer completely arbitrarily and give the person a copy of Xenonauts.
* The winner will be chosen 8 pm EET Monday 17th of November or a little later. Not before that though.
* If I feel extra charitable Monday, I might buy and give away three copies, but no promises. Only one is certain.

Edit: The Winners

Okie, I'm generous, so three copies. There were several entries I liked, more than three, so ended up doing this the old-fashioned way - rolling dice. The dice chose...

Being hit by an out-of-control car driven by lizardmen high on bath salts, exploding, and having his now-decapitated head hit a UFO passing over Kansas.

Since it was his first mission he got the honor of breaching the UFO with nothing but coveralls, a stun baton, and a grenade (pin not included).  He was buried with full military honors in our most expensive soup can.

I use the Sardaukar training regimen.  Ten rookies in every mission, no armor, stun batons, less than 5% survive their first five missions but the ones that do are not to be fucked with.

Urist was excited with his first mission to break into the UFO, and he ruthlessly charges in, shooting every alien in sight. In spite of this, he forgot his team mates. They were massacred. He proceeded to run into the UFO, shoot at the reactor core, and realize what they used to power their machines.
MAGMA.

His body was never found.

After getting off the ship, he was promptly crushed by a piece of ceiling that collapsed when a Xeno shot at the guy behind him. He managed to survive this, but died later from a combination of PTSD and deep vein thrombosis. (and internal bleeding ala ebola)

It was a dark and stormy night, you couldn't see as far as old Urist "boat murderer" McToady could throw. And let's just say he wasn't going to have a career in the MLB. Alexander "lightspeed" Ashcroft was our point man for the mission- went boldly where no man had gone before (not since evening anyway) and got a facefull of plasma for it. Turns out aliens can see in the dark- it's like there's a magical device that would run on tripple-A batteries and make everything peachy green. But HQ says there isn't, so the rest of us went back for flares. Then there was Bronislav "Eggman" Rabotnick, he might have seen the alien from far enough away, but the gosh darned thing was just too quick- made some kinda zombie out of him. Not a pleasant sight, that. Didn't become any prettier once we unloaded an M60 into it, but it did become a whole lot less un-dead. John "d'Fool" dePrenom was our tactical breacher, he thought his riot shield would protect him. And in all fairness it did, the first five times. One thing I have to say for the Aliens is they're persistent. Terrible shots though, as Salvador "Lucky" Rodriguez will tell you- some of those discharges completely missed our shield guy, despite him being one step short of a barn door. As we took a minute to compose ourselves before going to take out the leader, Aliens took control of Andrew "witless" MacHumurmann. Now his countenance was improved by the M60, I'll tell you that. Our final casualty for the night was the rookie, McToady- stepped on a toy boat in some puddle, slipped and broke his neck. I swear they're scraping the recruit barrel these days. All in all I would the mission went as well as could be expected.

Sounds fun. I'm in. Now I'm forced to write one of the stories this kind of game tend to generate (it took me a while to think):

After a long mission, Urist McToady knew where the last Alien was. "It" was hiding inside the UFO, behind one of those metal-like panels they used. Urist had just enough time to open the UFO door, rush through the corridor, reach the other side of the panel, blast that thing with his Shotgun and save the day, the veterans would be proud.

So he did it. He opened the door, rushed through the corridor, reached the panel, aimed briefly and shot. All pellets hit.

But "It" didn't died, instead, it crouched and turned towards him.

In the last moments of his life, before "It" stood up and melted half his chest with Its plasma rifle, Urist realized his whole life had been a build-up for this, a build-up to him getting killed there, in the UFO, so the machinegunner could turn berserk and murder Cacame, the missions highest rank and the Xenonauts best sniper.

Thanks for the giveaway!. It is good to give back, I hope I can also do something similar when I get a job.

Urist notices an alien sock lying on the battlefield and rushes headlong towards it only to find himself dissolved by energy weapons.

Urist is nervous about his first deployment against the alien threat and by mistake he trips going down the ramp of the skyranger and his gun discharges thus becoming the first casualty of the war on the aliens

On May 19th, 1984, Urist McToady's first mission happened to be the last mission for the Xenonauts.

The alien invasion was hitting it's peak, an incident that would be later known as The Day of Falling Skies. Across the globe, alien ships were mounting for a final assault to crush the last vestiges of human resistance. Many other nations including the U.S. had given up on the fight years ago, succumbing to the alien fleet. But the Soviet Union and her allies stood strong like great mother bear against the enemy. They sent their best and brightest to fight among the Xenonauts. Including Private McToady.

At this stage however; the Xenonauts had already built a force of strong and capable men worthy of the job. Their skill of arms, peerless. Their stamina, unmatched. Their spirit, unbroken after wave after wave of grey tide. So Urist McToady was not needed for several months after his arrival at headquarters. But then tragedy. In a hail of plasma fire, Urist McBadass was struck down in the line of duty. The scope of the loss for the Soviet Leaders and Xenonaut Generals was great; Urist McBadass had proven himself to be the greatest asset that the Earth had seen in one man. His death left a hole in the hearts of many and in the Xenonaut roster. As the Xenonaut General looked over his roster, he considered his choice carefully for someone to replace the legend among men.

Twas Urist McToady who would fill the gap.

The next day, the aliens pressed the assault for the greatest warrior earth had ever known was dead. A battle to end all battles. As spacecraft and mancraft battled over Europe, Urist McToady and the brave force of Xenonaut storm the alien mothership. Little Urist does not panic at the tide and holds his machine gun high with fervor. Many he helped to kill with a steady stream of iron rippling forth from the maw of his chosen weapon.

But alas! As they neared the Bridge, the veterans numbers were already dwindling. Urist McSniper and Urist McDemoman had both fallen to enemy plasma fire, and Urist McBoomstick panicked at an inopportune time and was subjected to a rather nasty death by sharp teeth. Now they had to breach the bridge and end this once and for all. Brave Urist McToady would place the breaching charges. The door went boom with a might crash. Plasma fire issued forth into the hallway like a blue river of death. Urist McToady braved the assault with his machine gun true and returned fire. Inspired by his braveryism, the rest of the squad piled in as well. After an exchange that left four more Xenonauts dead, the enemy was defeated. But the war was not one. The destruction of the Mothership was the only way.

The remaining team members quickly went about rigging explosives that they had to pry from Urist McDemoman's cold dead hands. Once the bombs were set, they ran to the Skyranger. By now, other aliens had landed as well however, their energy weapons poised to kill the intruders. Urist McToady knew what he had to do. Taking up a defensive position against the alien tide, he resolved himself to holding off the enemy off until the Skyranger had escaped. Armed to the teeth with more bullets than any one dwarf should carry, he held the line against the alien tide. But as she Skyranger lifted off into the sky and escaped from the belly of the Mothership, a stray bolt of plasma caught Urist in the shoulder. His position was being over run. With fearsome teeth bared, the alien charged at Urist for the kill. Urist smiled.

Moments later, the alien mothership had exploded over Europe. The resulting country side was littered with alien alloys that would eventually make many poor subsistence farmers rich off of the money made from selling it. Seeing the mothership defeated in such a manner destroyed the morale of the alien forces and they were forced to retreat from the Earth's atmosphere out of pure fear. But Urist McToady, along with seven other members of the squad were now dead. And yet it was a not a pyrrhic victor. Their brave sacrifices had saved the world. On his first and last mission with the Xenonauts, Urist McToady saved both the Soviet Union and the World. Masterwork Statues would be dedicated in his honor in mead halls across the world and engravings of his braverism would immortalize his memory for generations to come.

For in the hour of his death, Urist McToady was not afraid. Urist McToady smiled. He died a death worthy, nay worthier than that of Urist McBadass.

A Legendary Death.

Urist McToady, blade up heart true, but in haste forgot to tie his shoe.
Stove his head upon a block of cheese. An embarrassing fate, it doth not please.

I'm not a creative writer, but I can relate how my first X-Com soldier died in my first game of UFO: Enemy Unknown (as X-Com was called in Germany on release, no idea why). Even though it happened in 1994 I still remember, because I almost jumped out of my chair in fright; I played at night with the sound turned up and the lights off ...
The first UFO I shot down crashed in the field next to some farm buildings. My skyranger landed out of sight on the other side of them. The newly minted and very eager commander (aka: me) sent his soldiers out into the darkness (of course it was at night, the commander (aka: totally not me) didn't know better ... yet) and told them to hug the wall of a building for cover. My turn finished, I found my vision of the battlefield obscured by the then unknown, later feared black screen informing me of "hidden" movement. Until suddenly ... a green bolt of death comes screaming out of a window my first soldier just moved past, obliterating him from behind.
HE SHOT ME THROUGH A WINDOW!!!! I thought those were decorative only, as in pretty much every game up to that point. Needless to say, for the rest of the game, my soldiers were slightly terrified of every window in every building they encountered.
As for the commander ... well, after he pried his fingers out of the ceiling (as I said, I "almost" jumped out of my chair in fright") ... downing a few beers definitely helped ;)
