Dragons and forest fires
« on: November 14, 2014, 01:27:08 pm »

My fort has survived a lot. Forgotten beasts, werecreatures, a swamp titan.

Then a dragon showed up. I figured this was it. I figured that all the other times, but this time, I was pretty sure my fort was doomed. I conscripted almost anyone who wasn't already in a squad and told them to die gloriously. I don't use danger rooms, so my fighters' skills were probably not going to cut it.

The dragon killed most of the humans waiting at my trade depot inside my fort to trade, it got into the lower levels and burned some of the workshops. I couldn't see anything for the smoke, but I checked my squads and the order to kill was gone. Soon after the smoke cleared and the corpse of the dragon was visible. My fort had survived!

Now for the problem. There's a raging forest fire up above. It's spread out to all three sides of the river somehow, even though it was originally only on one side.

The game keeps pausing to tell me something has collapsed on the surface every few seconds. This is rather frustrating because it's hard to gather my forces and rebuild when everything keeps pausing.

Is there some way to override this and do you think this might be a bug or perhaps not working as intended?

Also, what can I do with the dragon corpse? anything good?

Congratulations at the glorious victory!

Unless you have a breachable dam at the ready, I think you'll just have to suffer through the fire, that's what I did with the fire a swamp titan(!) caused. I didn't get any collapses, though.

Gesh, danger rooms aren't that great. In my fort, Castlemarkets, I only had 3 guys sparring and in a year they were legendary and insanely strong.

yea my guys aren't even close to legendary. I'm not sure why. Their skills seem rather low, though any of them without a shield were melted by the dragonfire anyway (learned something!)

The fire has stopped, but above ground is a wasteland and the fire spread to my stockpiles (and some things are still burning.) I have almost nothing and not enough people to really get the fort moving again, despite a few migrants showing up. It's a crawl back to functional level, and all the spiked wooden balls I was going to sell to traders were immolated.

Is there a way to get dwarves to extinguish fires? The stockpile fire is booze I think, and it is mostly contained, but it continues to burn and there's an artifact sceptre burning where I deconstructed a craftdwarf workshop (I was hoping that would end the fire.)

Well, I'm not actually seeing any flames, just smoke. But the smoke doesn't go away it just lessens and then picks up again.

My dwarves were far too disorganized to butcher the dragon in time, sadly. It is on my refuse pile. They could have used the food, too. I've resorted to slaughtering the males of my remaining livestock (I moved what I could underground,) but the dwarves are so busy, I can't really get the meat to thew stockpiles before it rots. >.<

Is there anyway to tell what exactly is on fire, btw? Smoke in a lot of areas, but no flame, and it is hard to pinpoint what item I have that is burning. It's been going for quite awhile in my stockpile.

The loo(k) cursor should reveal any active fires - if you don't see any burning terrain or items, check through the stocks screen in case there's somehow a hidden burning item somewhere (though Toady supposedly fixed that bug in version 0.40.09).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

nothing shows as on fire with k, and I'm not sure how to check for fires going through the stocks list.

Something I noticed. Every area with smoke has an artifact item. They are all wood. Is it possible the items crafted in a mood could permaburn? I can't dump them to test it out, but I am dumping the flammable things around them.

Wooden artifacts can and will burn forever if they catch fire, and the only way to put them out is with water. Just hope they're not in a bin - there's no putting those out...

god no they aren't. thanks. I'll designate their spot as ponds and have water splashed on them, or I hope that works.8

You can only designate areas above empty air as ponds, i.e. the dwarves will have to throw the water over some kind of edge, not their own feet. You should be able to dig a hole in the floor on the level above, though (or a stair to throw water off from, if there is a free z level available).

I wish I could just dump the artifacts so I could handle them all in one spot. What a pita.

You can also reverse the hole in the roof method by channelling at the location of the items. That will give you a pit you can designate as a pond (but check what's underneath first...).

thanks guys, only one fire left to be put out, that worked like a charm.

My fortress is now a duchy, on top of all that. My baron died during the battle with the dragon, but I had another baron from elsewhere that had migrated to my fort (multiple nobles sucks) He became the duke.

My dwarves seem much more bosessed with storing refuse now for some odd reason. Before, I was pleasantly surprised with how they managed hauling without dragging everyone into it, now it's nonstop.

Hmm, I think I had hau8ling off on all my workshop dwarves, and now they've been replaced. Ugh, no dwarf therapist so I have to sort through it all manually.
