The survivors retreated to the deepest caves, as nothing on the surface was safe from the dragons.

At long last, the giants bled out and lay dormant, forgotten, but the world was already nearly drowned.

The blood had some small mercy though in the form of bloodsteel, Born of the life force of the giants, these shards were VERY far and few in between. And while they granted power to the wielder, when used in battle, the users were usually consumed by it.

The survivors eventually rallied under the Blood King, a man with a suit of bloodsteel armour covered in spikes and jagged hooks.
No-one knew if there was any man left beneath the armour at all, but he promised to lead them in a glorious crusade to reclaim the surface from the dragons.

The Blood King lead humanity on a bloody crusading that lasted for many years only ending when the Blood King used his power to banish the Dragons from this world thus ending his crusade and also his life.

Over the years, the blood settled into a thiner, more water-like ocean above, and a thick, rich plasma in the very depths. The people rediscovered the art of shipwrighting to cross the surface, though attempts of mad few to reach the wealth of plasma below met with failure.

Unbeknownst to them, festering in the depths of the deepest oceanic trenches were forgotten viruses, reproducing at alarming speeds in the rich blood. Eventually, they shall reach the surface, this very prospect had reawakened the white blood cells, which now hunt within the blood, ravenously devouring man and ship alike.

The giants, though asleep, silently weep as they see what their one-time beneficence has reap'd.

The Prophets told humanity of the second coming of the Blood King. They say that when Humanity's end is near he shall return to lead the people to glory and blood.

The prophets words brought people will but it also started dangerous riff between the sects. While all out war was not seen, rival followers attacked each other for the "original love". There are still factions of old that have lived through the years with memory long and forgiveness short.

The second coming may be arriving late...

It is through conflict that warfare develops and humanity uses reason to become more of an animal than any animal yet. The tears of the giants, the physical manifestations of their very sorrow, were harvested to fuel the development of twisted lifeforms - biological weapons that embodied grief itself.
