Dwarf Fortress wins Ascii Dreams Roguelike of the Year
« on: January 01, 2008, 12:39:00 am »

I maintain a blog called Ascii Dreams which covers a lot of the roguelike genre. It's quite Angband focused, as it also covers the development diary for the Angband variant I maintain called Unangband.

This is a quick note to say that the readers of the blog were polled to see which was their favourite roguelike of the year 2007. And Dwarf Fortress came out on top.

I'm not sure if Bay 12 games would want a 'winning logo' but I'm quite happy to create one if required.

And I guess a quick congratulations is in order.

Hi, and thanks!  It's good to know that some roguelike people are enjoying the game.

I can link to your site from my links page from the logo if you wanted to put a picture together.  Or something like that.

Thanks. I'll put something in this thread (probably early next week due to real life issues).

Much appreciated.

I know I voted for this one.  Sorry Andrew, I know that I said that your variant was my favorite on the oook boards, but DF has a greater pull on me.

For those that want to play another good roguelike I will pimp Andrews Unangband.  It's a good game and you should try it out if any of you need a DF break.  Personally I bounce back and forth between the two.  Sorry for going a little OT on this, and no hard feeling to all the DFers around here.   :)

Sorry if this is not the appropriate place to post this question...

I dunno about this, but I always had the impression that DF (dwarf mode) is quite one of a kind.  No doubt the adventurer mode is comparable and probably qualifies as a rogue-like, but the major pull to me is in the fortress mode.  Do other rogue-like have a similar mode?

To my knowledge, no.  I am trying to think of one, but I just can't.

Congradulations, Toady One! Celebrations are in order! I presume that is what all the fireworks and parties where about tonight?

I was tempted to vote for my own game, The Sewer Massacre, but in the end decided to vote for Dwarf Fortress, because it undoubtedly made the most progress that year.

Warcraft and those dungeon building games are the closest ones to fortress mode, of course adventure mode is very roguelike  :)

Grats Toady!

@ andrew: When i saw your new poll i immediatly thought that Diablo II would pwn everything else with the original Diablo coming in second.

After i voted, i remained unsuprised.
