Stone and wood decorations.
« on: November 10, 2014, 01:51:33 am »

Okay, so we can make metal crafts. We can stud things with metal. We can make wood crafts. We can make stone crafts. We can make bone crafts. We have three options for bone/ivory/nail decorations. We can make large gems and rarely, gem crafts. We can stud with gem. We can make silk/leather/cloth crafts. We can make silk/leather/cloth decorations. The only decorations we can't do are stone and wood. But strange mood dwarves often do this. I think we should be able to do wood and stone decorations.

Actually, you can cut stones at the Jeweler's workshop to encrust with.

I know, but that takes up precious gem cutter and setters. Which would you rather have? A stone crafter crafting stone to crafts, or a gem setter setting gabbro instead of blue diamond?

I personally have little use for jewelers aside from processing purchased raw glass, and find the cut-set means of decorating with stone an acceptable method. Never really noticed if there was an option to decorate with wood though, not that I'd really make much use of it since wood is basically junk beyond storage and bed uses.

Why not use gems? It's normally dozens of times more expensive than raw glass.

Training purposes and getting rid of excess stone.

I use the stone crafter and mason for that. The jewellers shop is for the dozens of sapphires, rubies, diamonds, and amethysts laying around. Unless I'm using obsidian, I don't really cut stones.

Caravans tend to bring lots of raw glass, due in part because I tend to buy it if I have plenty to spare or I'm looking to butter up the merchants with lots of little deals. Plus I try to avoid harvesting gems simply because I know I won't otherwise use them unless I feel I desperately need to boost the value of crap I'm selling to draw in attackers. Using the piles of raw glass from caravans gives my jewelers something to do and doesn't force me to strip-mine areas for gems. Yes, I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't mine more than I need at a time.

I use the stone crafter and mason for that. The jewellers shop is for the dozens of sapphires, rubies, diamonds opals, agates, jades, and amethysts laying around. Unless I'm using obsidian, I don't really cut stones.

Fixed. Probably more accurate for many players, myself included. Seriously, does anyone else find a disproportionate amount of amethysts on thier embarks?

Ew, filthy non-strip miner! I actually always have dozens of the precious gems, 102 rubies, 89 sapphires, 137 faint yellows, 86 emeralds. That's the count in my current fortress. Though, I do admit I'm a bit obsessed with micro managing every single details. I welcome sieges, it's a nice way to let my soldiers let loose from the long days of work.

"[ENVIRONMENT:ALL_STONE:CLUSTER_SMALL:100]" <--in amethyst raws. They are coded to be able to appear in any stone at all. This makes them very consistent in your embarks.

If you want it to be rarer, AND more realistic, change it to just say sedimentary only. Generally, amethyst is in geodes forming from evaporating water in surface sedimentary environments. In metamorphic, it would be crushed and lost its shape, and in igneous rocks, it would be all mixed into the rock grain in tiny little bits. So it shouldn't even be in those places to begin with.
