Surprise werecreature!
« on: November 10, 2014, 12:50:29 am »

So, randomly, and all of a sudden, one of my militia captains turned into a wereskunk!  Fortunately, he was rather green and didn't get to bite anyone, but I'm really confused.  It had the whole "Creature of the night has arrived!" announcement, too.

The odd part is that I'd never seen a were creature in this fort (though I did recently have an unexplained violent death, which may have been a tree). Don't creatures unstealth on attacking?  Also, he wasn't a recent migrant so that's out too.

It happened just to spite you.

He was infected by a previous encounter with a wereskunk.

That's what I'd assume as well, but it had to have been within the last month (as he had not transformed previously) and no werecreature has shown up...

When did the militia captain arrive to your Fort?

Well now that just makes things even more perplexing. Are you certain a wereskunk never before snuck onto your map?

If one snuck on, I never saw it.  It's possible, I suppose, but I didn't see anyone enter the hospital for unexplained wounds - just the one dwarf, mysteriously dead.  And the one that turned into a wereskunk was a brewer in his civilian life; he had no reason to venture outside the walls.

Im going to assume that between the ai tweaks and sneaking redux the now self-aware werebeast stealth-bit your brewer while he was off fetching an hemp sock for his uniform. All in an attempt to propagate his species.

It is very well a possibility that this is some newfangled AI behaviour and that werebeasts will now be revealed only once some conditions are met. Perhaps someone has to witness the transformation?

According to reports, werebeasts have taken weapons to the backside of people's skulls while in stealth.  Its fully possible it bit a dwarf and then got somehow distracted (or worse its programmed to bit and move on) while in full stealth.  Im rather certain kobold thieves would already try to avoid detection to a degree, even in 34.

I might have an odd solution.

One of my vampires, a few games ago, got infected by a weretortoise-dwarf-child (That was a child tantrum to remember!) I didn't realise he had, and when he got his "spells" he would go down for a few days to the catacombs and visit his tomb (he never went into his bedroom, he liked his personal grave better) and turn into a weretortoise, and turn back again, head up the staircase and do his job.

This happened for multiple months: I had no idea until I was overseeing a mason who was in a mood, months after the infections, I thought, had finished. The moody mason was down in the coffin-making mason workshop for some reason (I seem to remember he made a chair, it definitely wasn't a coffin or a slab, the only purpose I ever actually put that mason workshop there for originally)... Anyhow, I'm watching the mason mood away, when the vampire carpenter comes past, goes to his tomb, on break, turns into a weretortoise right there on my screen, wanders around his tomb for a bit while I pause and stare and set it to run again and stare and pause and check whether anyone else is a weretortoise, and let it run again... then turns into a dwarf and walks back out of the catacombs, past the moody dwarf who is whinging about not having any cut gems or something, and goes back to work.

I put it down to being weirdness at work, but I watched it happen for a few months afterward, before the fort died of framerate issues. I've not had a vamp-were double infection since.

Isn't it impossible to be a were-vampire?
