I would say play your first game in vanilla - the AI will be obscenely passive, but you'll get a very general feel for the tech tree, and learn the UI. Jumping straight into a mod is not something I'd recommend.

Playing single player mode is best though of as part city building part roleplaying experience. There is no challenge from AI whatsoever, but there's still some fun to be had with the setting.

Once you learn the ropes, get four reliable people (and I mean reliable - these games can drag like crazy) and enjoy the greatest multiplayer grand strategy of all time, bugs, warts and all. There has been maybe half a dozen EoFS games on this forum, and those few that didn't disintegrate due to players dropping out ended up as some of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've ever had.

I've given another try (still with Nova) and so far it's going better as i am starting to get the hang of the unit selection that while not as practical as other 4X i played is not anymore making me miss units with some auto-next troop as i know why it happened before (need to right click instead of left click sometime)

After ordering the building of more engineer, my House started to face famine, then plague.
I ordered my engineer to build more farms, but looks like it may not be enough for now.

There are some kind of rebels hidden popping up and killing us for reason i'm not sure about (out of being too hungry maybe, but they have tanks and etc .. even better equiped than my poor troopers, is the AI starting to actually do something ? )

Anyways after managing to kill attackers, i had to unfortunately notice someone important got killed

I'm less than a couple dozen of turns in the game , it's not hinting of great success :D

You should have a cruiser in space, I think. You can use that to perform orbital bombardments on rebel tanks and such, though you won't be able to hit infantry.

Yes, it does a good job at destroying tanks once they're inside a city/factory/etc...
My problem is that i see them only when they're attacking one of my buildings and never see them moving on the surface, probably i need some kind of radar or spotting unit , in order to avoid losing units too easily.

But still i was surprised to see the rebel AI doing something, while i got another house that declared war on my because i refused to give them my votes (and probably me asking them money in exchange of nothing displeased them a bit), and after dozen of turns they have not made a single move with their units that are still waiting and waiting.

AI loves to use Imperial troops to wage its petty vendettas while saving house troops for pacifying planets. So should you. I mean, who cares about hostile, parasitic aliens taking over the whole species when there is a giant pissing contest going on about who gets to sit on an ugly chair, right? Imperial navy is handy for transporting your troops quickly around your planets and bombarding enemies. Just watch out not to leave it in your system when the offices are shuffled, in case the admiralship goes to an enemy.

Speaking of aliens, exploration equals money when you sell the maps to the Vau. Regarding money, don't buy too much from the Guild. If their accoutns start overflowing with money, they will declare a Republican revolution and wage war against everyone. Likewise, save nobles for administering planets, use officers to lead stacks.

Emperor of the Fading Suns is pretty amazing, the guys went and made a RPG based on the fluff later.

this was actually pretty interestinv.  Holistic hired someone to dedign the setting and back story, and then developed both the pnp and crpg at the same time for concurrent release.

Likely a first and so-far-only event of that type.

small tip for those who play Emperor Wars: careful with the plague bombs...you might get a bad case of zombie apocalypse...i had to give up Malignatus because of that...

Starting out inquisition can be a pain in the a**, especially when they ban techs you want / are already researching. So here is a little cheat for you:

Also hint: if you are fighting aliens, try to capture as many alien units as you can. They are OP (at least in NOVA/HYPERION).

Well shit. i just discovered the "lolfuckthat"-button for the Emperor Wars mod. I was just finishing the pacification of Malignatus (read killing all the rebels) when i noticed a city on the norht pole. Thinking no evil thoughts i sent down a group of conscripts to look into it and ready it for orbital bombardement. What i found inside where "husks" aka Zombies. The same Zombies that appear with a plague bomb (or maybe it was a coincidence...i am not sure) in any case: three groups of husks made a meal out of my conscripts and i in turn started orbital bombardement till all of them were gone. Waiting a turn till i could bring in another transport with men i landed again...and found 20 groups of husks and a warlock...shit. i started orbital bombardement and brought down 5 or 6 of them before i evacuated my conscripts to bring in heavy armor. for that another turn passed and suddenly i found myself staring at a symbiot sporeship in my orbit...so either there were a lot of coincidences or Malignatus becomes a target for Exterminatus Extremis the moment you open that fortress.

The House system atmosphere is making things work, but while i have already my hands full with trying to pacify one world with those superiorly equipped rebels, i can't imagine having to take more than a couple of more worlds, the micromanagement with that interface must become overwhelming hellish.

I've been trying Emperor Wars and I have to admit it's hard to get a handle on. How do I build Engineers/architects, for one? Is there a guide anywhere?

Also, is the experience decent in single player? I'm not opposed to multiplayer but I'd like to get a feel for the game first, and I've heard things like the AI not building new cities.

You need to research Economics (probably the most important tech) and then you can build engineers in factories and forts.

Are you spacing out your resource harvesting buildings?  They need space around them selves to produce and if that space is occupied by a city it loses output.  Overcrowding of harvesters can kill output REAL fast.  Harvesters use the hexes up to two away, so keep that space clear.

Also this thread makes me want to play again, need to try and take Earth again.  Last time the 3 front landing plan went pretty well, took the shield base and was able to use that to start building more units to support the 2-3 bulk transports full of troops and tanks landing each turn.
