Legendary sworddwarf likes punching things...?
« on: November 09, 2014, 12:37:01 pm »

I trained a sworddwarf up to legendary, bought a long sword off some humans, put him in full steel plate with an iron long sword, and sent him on his merry way. Problem is, he often puts his sword away to start punching. It wasn't stuck in the animal, he placed it on his back like he was done fighting, said something about fragility, and began punching his way through his enemies. He's done this to giant cats, rhinos, elephants, and elves. He does often use his sword though, but towards the end of the fight, he puts his sword away and punches. Why? Is this some sort of bug?

bought a long sword off some humans [...] an iron long sword

If you have steel why use and iron sword bought from humans? he doest like it, even his fists (which are covered in dwarven steel) are better weapons than that.

I concur, clearly the Dwarf wants Dwarf steel.

Clearly he's so badass he doesn't need a sword, and thinks swords are not MAN enough.

Remove his sword and make him an unarmed soldier so when he reaches legendary striker and sufficient strength, he will punch heads off.

He did kill a rutherer with just his fists after decapitating a draltha. I think I may have him be a wrestler.

He's just executing enemies with style, that's why he's doing all these awesome melee combos and stuff.

Try giving him a higher-quality weapon and see what happens. I suspect he'll use it more.

It is not honorable to kill an unarmed opponent with a weapon, he is making sure to preserve his good name by killing with his fists. The sword is just to equalize an otherwise unfair battle against larger enemies (which is then puts away once he sufficiently damages them)...

Also elves aren't worthy of staining the blade with their blood

Isn't this the conflict escalation system in action? From what you've described, I gather he's mostly fighting hostile wildlife. In that scenario, the fight might not even hit 'Lethal' - the first level where belligerents routinely swing for killing blows. If you actually want to see him cleave shit asunder, have him fight goblins. Their fondness for torture and mutilation means that the conflict will likely reach 'No Quarter' (the maximum) very quickly.

To see this in action more directly, check out the arena. Spawn a couple of Bronze Colossi or other tough creatures on different teams and watch how they behave on different conflict levels.

Fights with hostile wildlife are always No Quarter right from the start.

I just carefully observed him in a fight, it seems he temporarily gets the "no viable target" just before he puts his sword away, gets attacked, then responds with his fists.

I recall the wiki said there's a bug that dwarves don't use two handed foreign weapon properly (can't remember clearly, I thought I saw that on the great axe page).

I always equip my squads local made weapons, just to make sure.

In fortress mode, one-handed vs. two-handed checks are performed correctly, but can wield vs. can't wield ignores height and broadness modifiers, so dwarves cannot equip great axes.Bug:0005812 See this forum post for details.

I just carefully observed him in a fight, it seems he temporarily gets the "no viable target" just before he puts his sword away, gets attacked, then responds with his fists.

Perhaps his little dwarven brain thinks the conflict is over at some point, so he sheaths his weapon and prepares to leave, then re-engages the enemy barehanded.
