Sign up to fight.

Heading straight to the nearest fighting pit, you ask a passerby where to find Conduit 2. The alien directs you to an electronic panel right next to the entrance. You place a hand on the screen and it flickers to life. It has no voice; instead the text appears in Galactic Common, the language taught to every race in the galaxy.

"Greetings, fighter Jack H. Art. Records show no previous Arena fights. Would you like to join one?" The screen shows three options. "There are three fights suitable for you. Single combat-until one yields. Team fight-to kill or incapacitate enemy team. Single combat-to the death."

Sign up to fight alien scum.

You decide to go right on in and fight some alien scum and prove humanity's superiority. It seems another human is coming to fight too, one of the fighters that arrived with you on the shuttle. He asks for Conduit 2, and the both of you are directed to a panel. The panel is large enough for the both of you, and it seems like there are separate screens. The Conduit speaks through text in Galactic Common.

"Greetings, fighter Jex. Records show no previous Arena fights. Would you like to join one?" The screen appears with three options. "There are three fights suitable for you. Single combat-until one yields. Team fight-to kill or incapacitate enemy team. Single combat-to the death."

Go meet Conduit 3, the Trainer.

You ask for directions to the training hall. Conduit 1 displays a holographic map, explaining in detail how to find Conduit 3. You go down the main entry path, take the elevator three floors down, make your way past the fighting pits and arrive outside a two-door gate. Two Arena guardians stand ready, nine feet tall serpentine constructs armed with a vicious, intricate spear in one hand and an alien blaster in the other. They scan you for a few moments, then the doors open.

Inside is a massive hall with practice drones hovering above being shot down; a team of different aliens try to take down a robotic golem, showcasing their skill and teamwork to a crowd of young fighters; fifteen fighters forming a square are equipped with headgear, all following some sort of martial arts in near perfect unison. You assume that there are more than hundreds of fighters training here. You hear footsteps coming closer and find a cyborg moving in.

"I am Conduit 3, the trainer. It is here that you may spar, practice and improve yourself, body and mind. Every course here is non-lethal, and if you successfully and honestly complete it, your skills will increase, just like winning a real fight. Non-lethal does not mean you will emerge unscathed, however," he buzzes, beckoning his head to a fighter being hauled away on a stretcher, his shin bone jutting through his leg. "Train at your own risk."

He walks you through the hall, showing the different courses to train. "That team of elite fighters taking down that golem over there are all retired champions. They train youngsters in tactics and teamwork. You should see them if you wish to increase your Social or Mental skills. That group of fighters with the headgear are practicing advanced martial techniques taken from elite armies and mercenaries around the galaxy. They will increase your Physical skills. You can also spar with other fighters, including your friends, but you will increase any of your skills at one point every two sparring sessions."

Harmony thought this was madness. Humanoid-Forms destroying each others forms for sport! What possible percentage could result in positive growth? He wished he was back home already, floating the clear blue skies with his friends-Equidistant, Tragedy, and Ebullient...

But, he had to survive...at least until the Eee Diplomatic core could fashion his release.

He was sure they were working very hard.

Harmony decided he should attempt to bargain with the merchants. Many of them offered equipment to gladiators in the hope that it would increase sales, he thought-what better demonstration than to watch your companies weaponry reduce a fellow Humanoid-Form to component atoms in front of a live audience?

If Harmony could obtain defensive equipment, well-if it could protect a fragile floating Jellyfish like him, surely it would protect others, or so at least the advertising would claim. Harmony had already conceived the notion that Humanoid-Forms often lied to one another, and he was getting pretty good at it as well.

Action: Harmony visits the shops and looks for some defensive equipment-he can't pay, but tries to convince a merchant to loan him some equipment in return for a commercial endorsement, if he should win.

Action: Harmony visits the shops and looks for some defensive equipment-he can't pay, but tries to convince a merchant to loan him some equipment in return for a commercial endorsement, if he should win.

You head for one of the nearby stalls in the Farport, searching in particular for a merchant specializing in some defensive gear. You have no credits, nor any goods to barter with, but you'll promise him endorsement should he win. Of course they know of your people's honesty and integrity, you are sure.

You spot a small tent selling some pieces of gear that might increase your chances of survival. You could probably alter their energy fields to make a sort of armor that floats around you. You hear shouting from deeper inside the dark tent, a man's voice and a woman's. A human female steps out, cracking her knuckles.

"Sorry 'bout that. Hubby and I were fighting over whether or not we should buy Grag's tent next door. He says it'll be good business expanding two tents," she snorts derisively, "and I say we don't got enough credits. We sold our family house on Mars and moved all the way here, and he says we should spend even more money!"

"Are you prodding on and on again? Stop talking and start selling!" you hear from behind the tent.

"Fine!" She breathes deeply and composes herself. "So, what would you be needin' love?" You tell her you need armor, but you can't afford anything. You say that you will promise commercial endorsement should you win, and you add that you're a diplomat of the Eee Consortium. Your Social is 4. The merchant's Social is 4.

Social: Harmony (4) vs. Merchant (3)= Harmony wins!

The merchant sighs. "Fine. You can have this old suit. I hear your type likes these. Just don't break it too bad. Oh, and if you win, shout 'Sarah and Jonah's Armor Stall!'"

You gain rusty energy suit!

Fight to the yield

You sneer at the weaklings you would face. You choose the 'fight to yield' option, and the panel blinks, signaling you to wait for a moment. Suddenly, the a rectangular opening appears in the wall next to the panel, allowing you entrance to the fighting pit. Inside you see an assortment of basic weapons for loan, but no armor or other gear. You see a spear made of bone, made for stabbing and not for throwing, but you could probably do so if you wanted. You see a sling and a pack of stones next to it. The last weapon you see are a pair of large daggers, rusty but sharp.

After you pick a weapon, the panel will instruct you to go right on in to the fight. You see your opponent already on the field, a lithe, goblin-like creature with a sling, parading and strutting around the pit, drawing cheers from the crowd. He can't be more than four feet tall, but he has a good bullet-proof vest and a helmet, so this definitely isn't his first fight. The pit itself is plain, circular, dusty and bloody. There are some stones laying across the floor, but other than that there are no obstructions or cover.

"To the death. And can I get a weapon first?"

You place your finger on the 'to the death' option, and a rectangular opening appears next to the panel. You are ushered inside and you see an assortment of weapons laid upon a table. You see an alien weapon, resembling a cleaver and a battle axe. The next weapon is a simple sling with a pack of stones. The last weapon you see is a long, thin dagger made for stabbing. After you pick a weapon the panel will take you to the pit outside.

You can already see your opponent through the window; a large, brutish alien with four muscular arms. In two of them he holds an axe with incredible reach. He wears no armor, but his skin is very hard and scaly. It seems like he's just finishing his last fight. At first you don't see his opponent, until you realize that the alien is standing on his corpse.

Go train Mental with the guys fighting the golem. Once they finish fighting the golem of course.

You head over to the elite trainers. It seems like they're just about finished taking down the golem. One runs up the golem's arm, sure-footed and speedy, then leaps and stabs its eye. He slides down, slicing all the way down to the torso as the golem slams its fist into him and sends him flying. Another teammate on the ground deftly catches his comrade, then continues shouting orders to his team. Two of them were behind while the golem was dealing with the first; now they are positioned right behind it's head. One jams his spear into it's neck while the other rips the head off and throws it to the floor. They both jump off as the golem falls to it's knees.

The children fighters clap and applaud with faces of awe and hope. You've heard of children fighters before; orphans with physical capabilities above the norm were sent to the Arena to become great fighters, but intergalactic law forbids them from actual fighting until they are 15 years old. They scatter as you near, and one of the instructors comes to greet you.

"Welcome, newcomer! Hope you enjoyed the show. What are you here for?" he asks. The man is a scaly, reptilian alien, with an aged look and countless battle scars.

You tell him you wish to train your mental skills. "Do you? Then we shall instruct you in teamwork, tactics and strategy, seeing as we're done teaching the children." He claps his hands and the orphans quickly stand and leave the hall. "But I must warn you, newcomer, this training will not be easy. It will take the entire day, maybe more, and your brain will need rest after. Do you still wish to train with us?"

If you agree, you will train for the entire day and must rest the day after. There is no risk of injury during training, but you will miss out on two whole days of fighting, and if you've got a reputation among the spectators you will lose a fraction of it for every day you don't fight at least once.

Take both daggers, hiding one in the back of my pants or something. On my way out, Ill grab a sling stone with my other hand. Then I enter the pit.

"It was just an accident, you see. I didnt REALLY want to kill him. He just didnt choose to give up. Its not my fault I couldnt know he could take that hit."

When Ive gotten down to the pit, I shall slow down and say - in a loud but measured voice - "My name is Jack. I have killed many, I murdered those who thought themselves untouchable. I think you know me as the Red Knave." After finishing my speech, or if I an attacked in the middle of it, I shall throw my stone in the air, in an attempt to distract the goblin but in on arc that could not hit me. Then I shall charge the goblin with my rusty blade, taking the moment of distraction as a chance to plunge it deep into his neck, killing him.

Skopi's freaking out. He's no fighter! A nervous glance at the others reveals that yes, all of them look far more skilled and competent than he.
With an anxious buzz of his wings, he shuffles away and heads to find the trainer.

Definitely gonna train. It'll be good to get some training in before I have a reputation to lose.

"I do." The alien smiles at your answer.

"Then let's begin." He takes you to meet the rest of the elite team.

They bring you to a part of the training hall that resembles a large library. One of them begins piling books upon books, all regarding tactics and strategies. You see the Galactic Tactics coursebook, along with Teamwork: A Link in the Chain among the pile; two of the most highly-regarded books for military training. The elderly lizardman opens a book and instructs you to read. After a few pages, he closes the book and asks you to recite the key points.

You have trouble remembering all the things, but you persevere, and the lizardman is very patient. "Patience is a virtue - and a weapon. A foolish foe will fight first, but the foolish foe will fall first. Remember that."

The training will continue on until everyone is done with their actions.

Yell "I'm gonna show this alien scumbag his own organs."
Pick up the dagger and the sling at the same time.

You pick up the dagger and sling at the same time, sheathing the dagger on your belt. You take a stone and feel it in your palm, then placing it in the sling. As you enter the pit, the screams of the onlookers is nearly deafening, but you get used to the noise. Deciding for a bit of showmanship, you raise your hands high in the air. The screams quiet a bit.

"I'm gonna show this alien scumbag his own organs!" The screams roar even higher than before; some cheer your name, more spit into the pit.

The giant brute takes a step back, snorting and like a wild animal. With speed someone his size shouldn't possess, he picks up his previous opponent's corpse and lobs it at you! His Physical is 5.

You see it coming, hopefully quick enough, and try to leap out of the way. Your Physical is 3.

Physical: Brute (4) vs. Jex (4)= Brute wins!

You saw it come too soon, and the corpse sends you flying backwards. Luckily for you, it didn't hurt so much because the corpse was torn in half. Unluckily for you, you might be torn in half too. You see the brute preoccupied, getting cheers from the crowd. Alien scum.

You slide both daggers into the back of your belt. You open the doors and grab some stones, entering the dusty pit. The cheers of the crowd rise as they anticipate another fight. The goblin sneers at you, throwing his stones in the air and juggling them. Then he catches them all deftly and places one of them in his sling. "Who tha hell ar you?" he yells.

"My name is Jack," you answer. "I have killed many, I murdered those who thought themselves untouchable. I think you know me as the Red Knave."

"Oh, you'll be red by the time I'm done with you!" he cackles, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Without hesitating, you throw a stone in the air. The goblin is distracted for a brief moment, looking incredulously at the falling stone, giving you just enough time to charge. The goblin hears your running and tries to dodge, but you leap into him at the last moment. You try to plunge the dagger deep into his wrinkly neck. Your Physical is 3.

The goblin hysterically tries to push it back. His Physical is 2.

Physical: Jack (6!) vs. Goblin (4)= Jack wins! ((Criticals are automatic wins, unless you both crit, then it's a normal stalemate.))

"I YIELD! I YIEL-" His screams are cut short as you slit his throat. His black blood oozes onto your hands. The crowd goes silent. They didn't expect a death in a yield match. Some younger onlookers start crying. Someone spits and curses. You do spy some shady looking people smiling in the crowd, however.

The AI appears, projecting a hologram saying: VICTORY! You can now choose an Arena dagger as a prize or allocate a point to one of your ratings.

>Go see the training conduit, since I don't know how to fight.

You visibly start to shake. You don't belong here. They'll eat you alive! Looking at some of the more bestial looking aliens, you think they'll take that literally. On the bright side, there's a place to train, so that's a start. Heading down to the training hall, you see fighters of all kinds sparring with each other or watching videos on techniques or reading books on theory. You see one of the people on the shuttle with you reading a book with a group of elderly aliens. You're at a loss for where to go, until the trainer arrives.

"I am Conduit 3, the trainer. It is here that you may spar, practice and improve yourself, body and mind. Every course here is non-lethal, and if you successfully and honestly complete it, your skills will increase, just like winning a real fight." The Conduit places his arms behind his back. "Train at your own risk; all courses are non-lethal, but that doesn't mean they don't hurt."

"I want to learn how to fight," you tell him.

The trainer bobs his head, making a whirring sound in his neck. "A fighter that doesn't know how to fight. Hmm. Yes. There is a beginner course that will give you basic knowledge, increasing your Physical and Mental rating. You may only take it once however, and it will take the entire day. You must also rest the next day."

He walks you to the area where a group of people wear headsets, practicing combat moves. "These fighters use the headset to learn advanced martial arts, but we can reprogram it with something easier, if you'd like."
