The World Set Free [5/5] Year: 1910 (Game Start)
« on: November 08, 2014, 05:53:14 pm »

Certainly it seems now that nothing could have been more obvious to the people of the earlier twentieth century than the rapidity with which war was becoming impossible. And as certainly they did not see it. [...] All through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the amount of energy that men were able to command was continually increasing. Applied to warfare that meant that the power to inflict a blow, the power to destroy, was continually increasing [...]There was no increase whatever in the ability to escape.
H.G. Wells, The World set free.

The twentieth century has begun, and the continuing progress of human technology is turning the world in an increasingly dangerous place. Humanity faces the choice between the creation of a permanent peace, or wars so devastating as to return to the origins of civilization. As the threat escalates, the world starts to consolidate into large power blocks, threathening to face against one another in one last war.

Are we making up countries or using existing ones in actual history? If making up, reserved.
Feel free to  make one up.

I'm confused. Are the traits what we fill up in the action slots or are they different things entirely?

Traits are different things entirely. You get to choose 3 things from the trait list, which gives you some significant advantages. Everyone starts with 2 of each action slot, but you can, for example, get additional ones (or give one up for another trait).

What do the traits mean? I already have the three I know I want, but it would be helpful for the others.

End of a decade, end of an era?

The first decade of the twentieth century has left an impression on the world which will long be remembered. Communist revolutionaries have captured Moscow, bringing an end to the proud Russian empire. However, the White army still defiantly resists this sweeping change, having hold of large areas of the Russian hinterland. Meanwhile, the Ottoman empire, long known as the sick man of Europe, itself is also divided by internal struggles, appearing to be on the edge of collapse.

In the United States, tensions remain high between the Southern Confederate states and Mexico, while the North East is relatively calm, despite having recently recovered from an economic crisis.
Seeking an opportunity, Imperial Japan has seized the de-facto independent, but nominally US controlled Philliphines. International reaction to this has so far been extremely limited.

In mainland China, the nationalist government has found itself increasingly unpopular, both domestically and internationally. While the initial ideas of independence and democratic vote where well received by the local populace, the reality has turned out very different. Warlords have seized control in various areas, undermining the central government, while a few rebel movements have been attacking foreign factories and other interests.

((Note: a map will be added once all of you have chosen a color))

Kolotenslov

As a nation squeezed in between the Ottoman Empire and Imperial Russia, the Kolotenslov military has always played an important role in the country. Under the leadership of the Alex Raman, their current dictator, the nation has tried to modernize and develop advanced technologies. While this has so far succeeded, a large gap has formed between the old-fashioned rural populace, and the modern scientific elite. Being one of the few nations supporting the Red Army in it's conquest of Imperial Russia, Kolotenslov has not made many friends, but perhaps one strong ally.

(Note, you might need to specify your location a bit more. At this point it could be anywhere from the Balkan to Northern India)

Argonesia

An new era is dawning, and Argonesia is prepared to embrace it with full arms. Though the rural population is still wary of progress, the strong administration and the plentiful resource deposits should be more than needed to propel the country forward in this century. Relations with Imperial Japan have been important for the country so far, but their recent seizure of the Southern Korean peninsula worries some, and enrages others who consider it traditional Argonesian territory.

The Celestial Empire of China

Despite the fact that revolution was almost 40 years ago, the Chinese Republic has still not been securely estabilished. In a large part, this is the result of some European nations (Imperial Germany, amongst others) regarding country as their de-facto colony, backing warlords for simple economic gain. Many long for a return to the protection of the Heavily mandate, but there are also contenders, both within and outside China.

Nevertheless, the status of the celestial empire as the primary Trading partner in Asia has given it significant goodwill and support with many of the European nations.

Western United States

A resource rich nation on the Pacific Coast, the situation of the Western United States is better than that of the other fragments. However, the chaos of the revolution has severly troubled the industrialization of the country, and while it is certainly not a backwater, it's Industry can not tip at that of some European superpowers, such as the German Empire.

(Note: you should define unusual climate)
Angland

Long time ruler of the Seas, the Anglian navy is still the dominant naval force in the world. Extending over 3 continents, Angland clearly has an empire over which the Sun never sets. However, the naval and imperial hegemony must be defended, and there are multiple rising threats in this world. The most prominent threat is off course Imperial Germany, whose Industries outclass anything seen within Angland. Though that is not the only rising power, as the former United states, and Asian world slowly gets itself together.
