Is material density important for armor?

Is how dense a material is important for armor uses?

It's important for shield damage. Not sure about the res, though.

The only densities that are important for armor would be the LAYER_SIZE value, since that defines how thick the damn thing is.

(you can already witness how density doesn't matter by the fact that adamantite is very light while being the best armor)

Adamantine is practically weightless. I carried dozens of adamantine goods, a few suits of armor, and twenty weapons of it in my bag, and wore a suit of it, but still was only at speed 0.980.

The materials' strength is important, not so much the weight, but the "strength" is a little more complicated than in other video games.

There is separately shear modulus, and impact modulus.  In both cases there is an amount of force it can absorb before failure; and an amount that it deforms before failure.  The best materials not only are strong but also don't deform by a large amount.  (it's basically just a simple linearization of stress/strain curves, inspired by how material strength is characterized in the real world, but you have to wrap your head around the units that DF uses which are non standard.)  wiki explains all.
