The ability to turn is very important: I repeatedly got very efficient worms that just hung on the border because they couldn't move. Three-tails (especially the neuron-like ones) apparently are the ideal combination of efficiency and maneuverability.

By the way did they finally fix the one part issue?

Where creatures would basically survive FOREVER because they never moved?

The max age for any creature seems to be 40k.  Thats like 10-20 minutes.

Wow, I'll definitely be playing this for a while.
Anyway, my first go with these settings:
food growth delay = 0, food spread = 8000, food bit energy = 40, hunger threshold = 85, and energy to offspring = 53. Also, sexual preference is set to hyper.

One thing very noticible so far is the fact that shades of green is very common in my game, making up at least... 50% of the population, as well as that, at about 98650 time units, I seem to be in a massive population explosion with no sign of slowing down, it started about at 70000 time units, which is, at my best guess, when the variants that could actually move started to band together.
I really like this game.
Edit:Ah, about half of the green shaded variants (Most of which have banded together into groups) Has eaten dry their corner, while the other bunch isn't going too well either, though some of them are starting to go further down, meeting the other types.

This one is energy efficient and can get to place he needs.
I haven’t got anything better so far. Straight ones might be more energy efficient, but they have problems with coordination.

The max age for any creature seems to be 40k.  Thats like 10-20 minutes.

The problem is more that they are the most efficient creature and they seem to take over the pool after a while.

I wouldn't even mind a way to auto kill single part creatures automatically.

With the maxage strictly enforce and no viable way to make more of themselves other than have others swim to it (or make babies on it, they are effectively mules.  Doomed to die off as the sterile offspring that only a slavemaseter wanted.

It's annoying to have fifty immobile 1-tile creatures just floating around.

But thats not what Im seeing.  They die.  Im unsure why it seems to be a thing for some, but they arent for me.  I suppose its one of the issues with the sim.

I checked on my little seedpool.  Coming along . . . unexpectedly.

Those sacs on the end seem to do . . . something, because they keep reappearing.  Or never die
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I wonder if its because of how the physics in the game work (spoilers:  nothing is swimming, its . . . vector? based)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And, at least in this hyper group, bulbous limbs seem to be popular.  Again, maybe more mass, but I dont know.  There is no resistance to push against, I can see that much . . .
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And the timeline and one last the latest reemergence of the 'scourge-type'
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So population is rather stable right now, as you can see.  I gathering that when chance brings all the little bots into one corner they all starve, which brings more energy into the 'pool', allowing more food to spawn.  Which means a population boom.  But this is what I saw most of the night.  -Do note I can not help myself from making analogues between the energy reserve in the pool to the sustained level of life to our economies irl.

Here you go

I have not checked GenePool but from the images I have seen in this thread it seems like a limited clone/homoplasic program of Biogenesis

GenePool is actually a common ancestor to a variety of modern species of low-level 2D evolution simulator.

You know what?
Perhaps I'll start this up, go through four different scenarios, one going through a starvation setting (minimum energy gained, maximum hunger threshold) and other settings, the take the winning creatures from each pool and pit them against each other.
