Hrm. The arms are a definite improvement and don't look like potatoes like mine do. I'm sold on that. Black liner tends to stick out more on my computer, so that's why I did that. Granted, I could try a softer color as well that's still dark. I may yet do that.

However, I'm not "quite" sold on the head. I kind of liked the short, sensible* way about it. But I can also see why one might be bothered by that tiny red mass in front of her ear. I'd rather not throw the whole head out since I'm enamored with that particular section, but perhaps I could pin something up there that would function like a bit of shading... A feather perhaps or a bit of braided or beaded doodad.

After a tiny bit of work though, I reshaded her head slightly and pinned on the better body. It looks a bit better. What do you make of it?

The skin is still not shaded right, though I think that might be more of an issue of contrast than of shading per say. I think the colors you're using aren't quite right. Also the hair is still impossible. >_> You'd need to have the lock coming from the other side, not the one with something already poofing. And even short hair will still come down to the back under your ear, like i have it on my version as compared to your version. The issue with black line art is exactly that. It sticks out too much as compared to the rest of the colors. That's why there's no true black in any FE mug. Also, if you note the changes I did to the eyes? Those look better and are more complete as compared to yours which are blurred with the skin.

Edit: Something like this maybe:

Edit the second: I just realized you might be going for a darker skin tone? In which case, might I recommend something like this:

Yes, I changed some colors around, basically the general problem with your colors was that they weren't contrasting enough. If you're not using FE colors, you need to be really careful about shading or else it comes out looking quite flat.

3 Pixels.

That's all it really took to change the eyes to looking better. The problem there was that I was using the Fiora Sprite as a base point for a great portion of the sprite.  However, I was not a fan of the hair bangs so I cut em out. My picture of Alicia is someone smaller though, she's not a very large woman. As such, there is a lot space next to her left eye in particular that I wasn't utilizing correctly.  Perhaps 4,8 or around that area.

Not sure where you're getting at with the shoulders though. The black lining is partially due to the fact that I use Darkling, so black stands out with ease. I may change it yet.

As for the poofy bit, I can try massaging that section down as I'm not particularly attached to it. It's not a detail of particulars though, as there really isn't all that much difference there. 1 retains the poof, 2 massages it down.

The shading is still wrong. I don't know how else to say it. Look at what I have vs what you have. Yours looks a lot flatter than mine. Also there's an issue with both the chin and the right side of the head that I just realized with mine and am editing as we speak. The issue with the black lining is that it contrasts too much with the the other colors. It's not an issue of contrasting with the background. It doesn't need to do that. It needs to contrast with the colors in the sprites and if you contrast too much it makes the sprite itself look off. Also edited her right strap to make it look a bit better per xan's suggestion:

Edit: And yes I realize the eye fix was only 3 pixels but even 1 pixel can be really jarring if it's off...

Edit 2: The real issue with the lock coming down on the right side vs the left is that the shading on the right (her left) just doesn't fit having a lock dangling down. You'd have to basically reshade that entire part, whereas I only needed to make minor changes on the left (her right) to make the lock look decent.

Hrmm. You've changed the hair color as well and the eyes. The problem with that, is that it completely washes her out having her hair that grey of a shade and her eyes become a bit less sharp. I'm alright with a bit of sharpness and garishness. She's a pirate and spends a lot of time having to squint across the horizon. They may not be large anime-ish eyes (Granted, other characters fill that far more than the most recent sample) like a lot of other characters have. Marisa, from a different Fire Emblem may be a good example of that; granted her eyes are rather shaded and like she hasn't slept for days.

But, I do like the direction you've gone with the hair overall. And the strap does look better. I've created a hybrid based off of that particular look.

And hrmm... Perhaps you had the right idea with the hair. I tried a lighter, but still blackish grey lining that also didn't blend in with the rest of her... Her and I'm not satisfied with it.

Still posting a hybrid for the thread though, and I'll have to keep working when I have spare time. Toning down the brightness of her armor seems to a good step to take and I may go with the hair color you had chosen. We'll see.

I'm not going to change anything more but I'm just going to say once again: The colors and stuff that you've been picking this whole time continue to have the problem of not being contrastive enough. It's with the skin, it's with the hair, and it's with the eyes even. If you pick stuff that's not as contrastive as the shades of actual FE stuff, you're most likely going to have the end result be a portrait that looks flat. If you want less bright and anime-like colors, I'd suggest switching over completely to FE8 colors, as they tend to be darker and less in your face bright. But until you have a lot of practice knowing how to color sprites, using your own shades is a recipe for bad sprites 9 times out of 10. I rarely use colors not in the FE palettes and even then it's mostly just for one small thing, etc. But, in the end, it's your sprite.

Eep. That's a terrible level from Alicia.

Here's hoping for better ones in the future. The dice were not in my favor today.
