Is there a way to quickly fill the drowning chamber?
« on: November 06, 2014, 10:59:14 pm »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This maze can contain a whole army but it takes age to be filled by the aquifier.

Pause. Put "rb_eval df.gametype = :DF_ARENA" then press k, and place water like you would in arena mode. Then, before unpausing, type in  "rb_eval df.gametype = :DF_UNRETIRE"

Oh, that's a dfhack thing. Forgot to mention that.

It works (should be DWARF_ instead of DF_ though).
I wonder if there're some conventional ways. I tried digging out more walls near the aquifier, but that didn't seem to speed up things.

My thing does it for DF, not DWARF.

Maybe we are using different versions.

vertical water teleportation, and/or-- VERY HIGH PRESSURE.

water will instantly teleport downward through columns of 7/7 depth water. This means that if you have a suitably sized cistern over the top of the drowning chamber's corridors-- say, a large chamber overhead with some hatch covers put on the floor-- and fill this cistern with several Z of water, opening the hatches will flood the corridor almost instantly.

Alternatively, instead of flooding from the aquifer, you use a pumpstack to move water out of it and into a vertical flush tank, and hook up there instead.

Here's the wiki article on pressure.

With enough pressure behind it, water becomes downright lethal, and moves scary quick. The problem is that aquifers absorb pressure. You cant pressurize water if an aquifer is at the ground level, like your current flooding design does. You would be better served pumping water out of the aquifer into a pressure tank, then opening that into the drowning chamber instead.

Ah, thanks.
I can seal off the aquifier using draw bridge, so it is not a problem.

So I need to build something like a water tower over the maze? Time to test the screw pump.

Pressure is a good start, but this looks really slow anyway due to drying time and draining headaches and blah.  You'd ideally want floor grates every couple of hallways at least going below to drain quickly, but even then you have to wait a good while, and that adds a major civil engineering project to it.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

As long as the siege is broken, I have plenty of time to wait.
There is another aquifier two floors below the maze. I can link them togehter, using a draw bridge to control the draining.
I suspect it will be faster if I just build tons of cage traps.

Water can rush through that maze with alarming speed, since none of the corners are diagonals. That means that pressure will propagate around them just fine.

what I would do, personally, is create a 10x10 room, that extends upward about 7 z-levels. I would install a floodgate and attach it to the drowning chamber. Close the gate, then fill it all the way to the top.  The height and size of the pressure tank needs to be calculated to have MORE water inside than the corridor can hold, so that even as the pressure tank drains into the corridor, the pressure wont drop to 0.

A quick and dirty estimate shows that you have ~500 or so walkable tiles inside the drowning corridor. That means that your pressure tank needs to hold more than this. 10x10==100, x7 z high == 700. Enough to completely flood the corridor, and not exhaust the supply.

~500 for the corridor, + 100 for the current Z level of the flush tank that the corridor is on, and another 100 one Z up in the flush tank. This means that the water in the corridor will always have at least 1P pressure behind it.

This works very much like the flush tank of a toilet. Pull the lever, and WHOOSH.

Yeah, that means a huge above ground structure with lots of screw pumps.
I'm not sure if I can finish it before next siege, but the idea sounds fun enough to try.

Don't forget the drainage system, you shouldn't have grates all over the place like GavJ suggested since that would make it impossible to fill with water, but a second drawbridge (or several, if you forsee problems arising)  leading to a hallway that dumps into a cavern or aquifer would speed up drainage immensely.

I have something like that for my cistern, it allows me to keep water cycling through, and still have the option of sealing up and having access to water if a siege appears (though obviously a drowning chamber would have a different use for the same technique).

I already built one (the X on the left side is a stariway to the aquifier below) and there was a bridge to the right.

Water piston?

If you dig out the bottom underneath the drowning chamber and have grates to allow the water to teleport in, dropping a block which is say, 5 z tall by however wide x/y into a 3 z deep chamber of water will give 1 z on top of the level where the block was and 1 z in the level above.

I've not done it with water which may behave differently due to pressure being a thing, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it blasts all of the grates into the air or something crazy like that.
