Roofs are not safe place to hide

I got a goblin siege yesterday. During the fight, two of my animals were shot and killed on the defense tower.
I made this post to show some not-so-obvious "holes" that may cause troubles.

The stray war dog was killed near the stairs on the 2nd floor. At fist I thought it was the walls of the 2nd floor which allowed diagonally travelling arrows from below to go through. But then I realized perhaps it was the stairs.
I still haven't figured out how the cat was shot. I found some arrows on the roof, whoever did that must have good eyes to see through floor and roof.

It's really unfortunate when you get a goblin like that, and you have a tower full of marksdwarves, who you can never get to shoot at specific targets, so they waste their shots on melee goblins (or worse, they are a tile away from the fortifications, which is no challenge to a goblin bowmaster) and the goblin picks them off one by one

I rather like it.  It helps eliminate that ;one size fits all' defense mentality.  Im waiting for the day of digging siegers and more intelligent BD.

Can they? I thought it was hard to do from where they stood.

They both probably got too close to the fortifications, go shot, then wandered away to bleed out. Fortifications just force a skill check, they're not impenetrable.

I thought about that. But then I found broken arrows on the ground near the corpse.

Yeah goblins can definitely shoot through fortifications as if they're nothing. No archer tower is safe at all when you have fortifications right next to the stairs.
This is why you give your marksdwarves shields and armor. Not leather, use metal and other clothes. Use capes or cloaks too, they cover the entire body and have the possibility to deflect a lot of hits. Given enough time a dwarf can become a master armor user and train their speed to become the fastest dwarves in the fort even with 50 pounds of metal on them.

Dwarven gymnastics: an olympic event requiring the contestants to dive through hoops and obstacle courses while wearing full plate armor as well as two layers of leather clothing. It is not for the faint of heart.
