Killing with cold?
« on: November 05, 2014, 11:02:06 pm »

I've been working on a mod (for modding practice) which adds in metallic dragons, in the vain of D&D's own. I encountered a pretty big problem though, I can't seem to get a breath attack that will hurt anyone by cooling them down. Here are the raws:

I've also had a problem with getting bleeding syndromes to work on a gas, but I replaced that breath attack with a molten rock spray which is appropriately deadly.

The orcish Frostskald kills pretty effectively, but not quickly.

Thank you! It doesn't seem to work fast enough to have the desired effect of dragon breath that will just freeze people solid in an instant. The dragons tend to claw people in two before they can get frostbite. At least that is the arena result, but I thought I remembered that temperature was weird there. I guess I'll try to find one in the wild.

No indeed, those freezing spells are not likely to kill faster than a dragon can claw something in half.  I don't know how you would accomplish that.

Icy webs are a sort of fast acting frost spell you can try too. (but note they are effective because they are webs, not particularly because they're cold)

You might be able to get that sort of effect with a transformation syndrome and a custom creature set up to represent the frozen-solid target. [CREATURE:ICE_BLOCK] or something like that.

See thread here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=139801.0
TLDR; only the brain matters for temperature death causes.

On another note, injecting a supercooled or superheated poison into the bloodstream via a bite/sting attack (or perhaps other means?) causes instant full-body temperature change (at least of all vascular parts?) which can lead to instant freezing to death or incineration.

Ah very nice.  I've (accidentally) implemented the magma stinger before, but the frost sting never occurred to me :)

1) Change their tissue materials to take cold damage at a higher temperature.

Cold damage is proportional to how far below the damage point you are, so if you start taking damage at -200 degrees or something ridiculous, then -230 degree breath will do almost no damage to you. If you start taking damage at -10, then the -230 breath will likely obliterate you almost instantly.

2) Change their "homeotherm" value to be lower. This means they start out colder to begin with, so it's less effort for the breath to hurt them.

3) Change the "insulation" of layers like fat to be lower. This makes them change temperature a lot faster / weakens the influence of homeotherm.

When you embark on a map with -1000 set into the custom world gen for temperature, dwarves die outside in many seconds, but LOGS (with no homeotherm/metabolism) disintegrate in like, 1 or 2 ticks. So cold damage is indeed lamost instantaneous if it's a big enough difference and insulation is nerfed. The more you change dwarves to be similar to logs thermodynamically, and more vulnerable to cold, those breaths can be anything from useless to insta-disintegration-ray-gun.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

That's it.  I'm building my next house out of Dwarves.
