Where did my dwarf go? Bridge-a-pult
« on: November 05, 2014, 05:59:27 pm »

I was a little slow with setting up my military and got a waresloth inside my fortress. All loiters (dwarfes without nicknames and special roles) got drafted in to a brawler squad and ordered to bravely bumrush the beast. The only casulties was one dwarf that managed to bloodie up the entire castle before falling asleep in a stockpile and sadly one unlucky named one that was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Anyway the moron which made a mess is locked inside a room but the otherone couldnt move and was in the middle of a corridor. Without a hospital to nurse him to health to be quarantined I did the only sane thing and build a bridge where he stood. I forgot about the catapult effect and thought I could just raise the bridge and smash him to bits afterwards. He is now missing for a week... Where did he go? He isnt in the corridor so did he disinegrate and travvel through 20+ layers of dirt and rock and his remains splattered on the surface?

It's terrifying.

Anyway, you got rid of him, smashing him or not, huh?

Yea only question that remains is when to release the other possibly infected beardy. I only let him loose to drink every once in a while and make sure that I got a squad ready.

I've had three dwarfs disappear consecutively, presumably in ice (if so, no one has found a block of ice with their name on it, so I'm not convinced) and they got the standard "missing for a week" announcement a week after each one disappeared, each several months apart.

...When I get another pick, I'll go send someone I don't like to find out what happened to them. People say they get encased in ice, but I'm not convinced.

The only sane thing would have been to draw a hospital zone. It's just an arbitrary-size zone, preferably containing a bed. That's all. Just having such a zone enables all healthcare. Lack of healthcare-relevant goods can still throw errors.

Of course, a potential new werecritter doesn't primarily need healthcare but quarantine (the transformation fully heals them if they survive a month). Bridges are good for that, but the actual value of a werecreature citizen is, ahem, dubious.

Atomsmashed. Bridges don't only smash stuff when crashing down, they also crush everything that's on the pivot line (the tiles that turn into "wall") when raising.

^Yup, I lost a set of masterful steel and an artifact battle axe because I thought I'd be smart and use single tile bridges, zombies showed up before I was fully ready for them and I ordered the civvies inside, and set the military to train at the downstairs barracks, last one in got on the bridge as it triggered...

Ugh, I accidentally opened a bridge on my masterwork-only squad...

"A masterwork of Shan Oddost has been lost!" For each piece of armour. On ten dwarves.

I actually had this happen with a minotaur today totally by accident.
I have a bridge across a stream midmap, and "Zar Breachmoths the Lost Tenacity" appeared on the edge. I immediately had the lever pulled, hoping it would block him. Instead I watched as by pure chance he got on the bridge just as it went up. He landed 8 squares away, and then left bloodsmears another 4 squares long as he plowed across the ground. He went unconscious, with broken ribs and lungs.
I love this game.
