Maybe this will be interesting to some
Today is 20 years when the world was closest to nuclear destruction, not counting Cuba.

Back in  1995, norwegian  launched some scientists rocket near northwestern coast of norway for study the aurora borealis. It was lunched from position that is known for patrolling of USA nuclear submarine called Ohio.  After russian detected it with electronic command and control network known as kazbek, and the radar shape/speed of the object was similar to USA nuclear rocket trident, they feared it was a high altitude nuclear attack that would work like EMP to blind russia radars. They went to state of high emergency and called Boris Yeltsin with few other important persons to be on position in case of need to launch a full on nuclear response. But thankfully after following the rocket, it was established the trajectory is not aimed at russia.

And this happened as someone did not reported the plans and date of launch (USA/norway reported it in advance) to the operators of the russian radar systems.

Eduard Liminov on why the recent Putin's speech means that he is finally radicalising and also on why you don't intimidate Russians.
A short translation of this one, maybe? It doesn't sound like the type of link you usually post.
Basically, the fact that Putin said all this stuff about "NATO legion in Ukraine" means that he has lost all of his illusions about NATO being willing to compromise. And that, in turn, means that he now recognises that his only choices in this conflict are either to win or to surrender. And Russians do not surrender.

Anyway, Cassad reports that the assault on Peski was unsuccessful and that Avdeevka is no longer being attacked by the NAF, so yay for the Ukrainian army.

Does he elaborate on what 'winning' means? Because this sounds dangerously like the buildup of a kinda-sorta-accidental WWIII.

Ukraine isn't in NATO, and I'm sure he doesn't want to provoke a direct conflict with NATO; else, he would've sent his troops into Ukraine without any attempts at disguise, Red Alert style.

I'm still pretty sure that's just a posturing oriented for students to make them more patriotic and stuff. Words are just words; they can be thrown around and taken back without any problems (a la that Putin speech about protection the Donbass).

Ensuring that Ukraine is unaffiliated with NATO and EU and has a political anchor of pro-Russians tethering it to Russia. Sergarr is absolutely correct, there is no threat of any actual wars happening whatsoever. But I'd say that this change in Putin's rhetoric is significant.

That isn't even the first time, we actually came really close to nuclear war because of a mistake someone made, panic, or even confusion of some sort or another several times during the cold war, and I'm not talking about high profile stuff like the Cuban Missile crisis.

In one case, it was due to people getting freaked out over a bear rattling the airbase fence, but didn't know it was a bear. That one was actually during the Cuban Missile crisis though I think.

Thankfully the people in these places are really not into making rush decisions. We wouldn't have been alive otherwise.

No, it makes sense. Everyone knows that the filthy communists/capitalists weaponized bears during the Cold War. And if you don't increase military funding, we won't be able to close the bear gap!
