Unfortunately, I do not hail from a culture where injustice is seen as something shocking. Eastern Europeans in general tend to cynical and fatalistic, and while I do support the cause for LGBT rights, I have to confess that I do not feel particularly motivated to actually do something to further it.

Smee, are you familiar with the oft spoken Russian mindset that the majority should not have to take into account minorities, as doing so "harms" the majority, and benefits the minority at the expense of everyone else? Its some kind of distorted "for the greater good" conservatism.

Gays are not legally mandated to be silent, they are as welcome to speak out as anybody in Russia, including the hysterically anti-Putin newspapers such as "The New Times."

MonkeyHead: I'd say that backlashes against such extreme views do happen more often than not, both in Russia and in the rest of the world, the foreign media just never focuses on them.
