Actually, different people. Not just different persons, but actually a different kind of people (it won't be until early to mid 2000s before the Bureaucrats will rise back to power). As for fewer restriction, well that's capitalism for you- keeping the state and the worker out of your affairs.

Speaking of Patton, I admit I wasn't aware of his antisemitism. I remember him being kinda of an hard-ass bastard, but not this. The more I know.

I think he was some kind of a mirror-Montgomery, just as egoistic but in a very different and non-British(apparently Patton had little self control) way. But he and a couple of other fellows from WW2 should go a long way in demonstrating that the idealistic West has no issues in also being able to produce producing cynical, ruthless nutcases ready to throw their lives away on their way to whatever is their objective.

In a very interesting aside, people like Patton and Montgomery in the USSR tended to defect to the Nazis and join the SS killing squads.

I think Sheb's trying to push his customary anti-Russia line here, and I am just making a joke about how Nazi Germany with Allies invaded the USSR and got half of Europe under Soviet rule as a result - if that's not an epic failure at colonialism, I don't know what is.

This may be totally wrong, but I'd like to give my impression of things from back then.

The government was still formally controlled by the same people who controlled the Soviet Union e.g. ex-Communist Party bosses and KGB officials (who became FSB etc). One of them is still President today. At the same time the "real" power lay with the mafia, gangsters, black market and businessmen and all the rest of it who had already been controlling much of Russia for some time during the period of Soviet decline and Perestroika; all that happened was their grip got a lot stronger and they got a hell of a lot richer.

Am I totally incorrect? Please let me know.

Knit tie, don't attack Sergarr and Guardian for being extremist when you then go and say something silly like that. Do I need to dig up my post about how Russia is not Nazi Germany, nor is Western Europe Nazi Germany? Also - I don't really know if you can call Nazi Germany's actions against Russia "colonialism" in the same vein as against Africans because they were invading another colonial power...

Yeah, blaming the whole of Western Europe for the actions of Nazi Germany is kinda weird. And I'm not pushing an anti-Russian line, it's my opinion that the USSR did the actual job of defeating Nazi Germany, but that the US, by showing up and getting into France, Belgium etc, managed to grab a sphere of influence and saved us from communism.

Or is stating that the USSR imposed communism on Eastern Europe an anti-Russian line now?

I was trying to make a joke about how Nazis and co. tried to grab some colonies in Russia and ended up as Russian colonies themselves.

Also, not all people view communism as a swear word.
