Apparently Putin's press conferences are action movie material now.

I half expected the videos showing Putin doing some judo stuff, bear wrestling, kicking ass, and possibly blazing some guns, but nope. I am disappoint.

Also, what would those guarantee be? I doubt a piece of paper is going to make Russia feel better.

Owlbread, what do you advocate then?
I think a piece of paper really would make Russians feel better. It would show that the USA doesn't want to fight and doesn't want to spread NATO further, and that's going to lessen the hostility from Cold War-thinking Russians by at least an order of magnitude.

What about that piece of paper called the Budapest treaty which Russia broke?

what about the "we're totally not expanding nato past germany guys" that is apparently not even a thing anymore

america just retconned that shit out
And that needs to be addressed too. Trust an insider, most of the Russians feel morally justified in breaking the Budapest treaty because the USA has welcomed Ukraine, which is past Germany, into NATO - "If they can break their own treaties, so can we!" I think a mutual apology is in order.

It's good to see that Russian PR department can do at least something right.

Except no one ever signed a treaty saying NATO wouldn't expend eastward. Russia (well, the USSR) did sign one saying that countries in Europe should be able to freely choose their alliances however.

Dollar keeps falling against ruble. Something's happening, and that something's working, we can say at least that much.

I've heard rumors that the recent jump in ruble was because of 600 billion ruble credit the Central Bank has given to Rosneft to pay up their outer debt.

Could be. Any definite confirmation?

No, that's why I said "rumors" and not "news".

What are you referring to? A lot of Soviet proclamation on Freedom of this and that were made, neither side expected them to be anything other than rhetoric.

(Also, shouldn't this be Нитка о Россия? Rather than Ветка?)

I think it was in the Helsinki agreement? Not sure anymore, I'd need to dig it up. And yeah, no one expected those to be true. Still an agreement that exist.

The local rumor mill (i.e. the financial media) says it's because the Russian central bank is selling foreign currency reserves. It used this picture for illustration purposes:

Again, could be, especially if the CB bigwigs were explicitly ordered to do something with no "buts" this time, but the Western financial media have been pretty much baselessly speculating about Russia the entire time, so I have no reason to view their opinion as objective.

That's a cheap tactic: post a picture of a guy you are writing about looking vaguely sinister and voila, emotional tone set.

Also, shouldn't this be Нитка о Россия? Rather than Ветка?
Technically, it should be "Тема: Россия", or "Тред о России."

How a central bank credit given to rosneft makes the ruble spike?

Interesting question, really. Perhaps the credit was in foreign currency?
