Not really.

I've got one or two of the 4 components without looking for "wild pokemons".
I've finished soem of the side quests without grinding either.

But you usually have to read the quest descriptions and dialogues if you want to have an idea of what you are against ;)

Yeah, some of the components don't have minibosses, so they're easy and you can do them without grinding at all in some cases. Others just require parts (usually 500), so they're pretty much just grinding. Any miniboss ones should be saved for last.

And the end boss is much harder than the minibosses, of course, so if you didn't beat the miniboss handily I suggest grinding a good bit more before trying to end the game.

They do, but they hit a cap, and said cap isn't too bad so long as you've been getting decent gear and vehicles.

My main tactic is usually to beeline for the Hyperdrive Stabiliser; it's an easy quest (1-3 standard encounters), and usually ends up with you recruiting one of the best vehicles in the game afterwards. With that on your team, you'll be good for killing most of the random encounters until lategame, and by then you should have picked up a few other top tier vehicles, equipped them with top tier weaponry and upgraded them quite well.

Alternately, try to get a reasonable squad together and take the stabiliser by force; it's a tough fight but it unlocks one of the better starting escort teams. Makes the game much easier.

Assuming the Hyperdrive Stabilizer is one of the components you need, anyway. They seem to fluctuate a good bit.

I thought his comparisons to FTL were unfair or just wrong. After a few hours vanilla FTL is going to start repeating missions too.

He's saying this in the context of comparing Convoy's encounters to FTL's:
Quote from: TotalBiscuit
It's just multiple choice and then there might or mightn't be a battle.
Which to me he seemed to be asserting that as if it was not exactly what FTL's encounters were.

Well as I said before some of the missions in FTL have branching options which depend on availability of certain crew or hardware, Usually with better or radically different outcome.

Convoy has just fixed dialogs.

He was referring to the outcomes rather than the choices themselves (the only difference there is that Convoy doesn't have conditional choices), but I think I see his point now, since events in FTL could end with damage to your ship, losing or earning members of your crew, getting ship blueprints and extra scrap, all in addition to the possibility of a battle.

But similar things happen in Convoy. I've gotten scrap, fuel, recruits, damage, battles, all sorts of stuff.

Then I have no idea what TB was going on about.

the main thing is the lack of detail like crew, their exp, crew members, power management, and a more detailed and branching upgrade system and weapon variety. I thought it was pretty self explanatory. The game just doesnt have as many layers of detail to the combat or upgrades.

I see. That's too bad.

I picked up the game today and am having fun with it so far. I really do wish event chains wouldn't repeat so much in a single playthrough though.

Game threads never die.

So, how do you sell escort vehicles?
An encounter gave me a truck with lousy stats, do I have to just run it off the road at some point?
