Grimdark: Warhammer 40,000
« on: November 04, 2014, 03:17:09 am »

I'm surprised that there are no threads (as far as I know) on the venerable Warhammer 40,000. Owned and strictly controlled by Games Workshop, it's a tabletop and video game franchise set in the far future, where life is shit. Here is the summary/synopsis:

"It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth.
He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that he may never truly die.
Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse.
To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war.
There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods."

It has its origins in the 80's, so expect to see plenty of 'strange' art. It has a healthy dose of skulls, fortunately. Also, while the tabletop miniatures are really expensive, the video games are not half bad and they're available for a very reasonable price. Anyone else into this?

I play tabletop 40k. Army building goes slow because I don't have a ton of disposable income right now but I enjoy trying to meet up and get a few games in at least once/week in the Atlanta Ga area.   Primary army is Dark Angels:Ravenwing, and I'm been slowly building a thousand sons force with some Spireguard (astra militarum) allies.

Edit:
Dark Angels are a group of the superhuman space marines, designated the 1st Legion in past millenia. Ravenwing is their special fast attack company consisting of bikers, fast speeders, and attack aircraft.

Thousand Sons are a legion that fell to the corruption of chaos. They were originally known for their strong and widespread psychic powers. Now most of them are piles of dust locked inside the suits of their power armor after one of their greatest cast a huge spell to protect them from mutation and it didn't go quite as planned.  The strongest of them remained and are known as sorcerer's that command their brethren. Worshippers of the chaos god Tzeentch, God of change.

The problem for me is money and also the distance to the nearest store.  ::)

Roll20 has a reasonably active online tabletop community that plays 40k. The setup works well and last time I checked in they had 5-6 different armies complete for use.

Me and a few other guys do Only War sessions over OSU-GT (and I made a character creator for it as well for the purpose of generating new meat for the grinder in seconds!).  I'm not too interested in the actual army tabletop though, but I like the RPG stuff.

I don't suppose the Tau are among those 5-6 armies? :o

I don't really play WH because...well, lack of time and opponents, really. But I do enjoy some of the lore and stories about the setting quite a bit, and I have a soft spot for my Space Communists :v

I started collecting some models last year. I like my Catholic Space Nazi Supersoldiers to wear green and wield flamethrowers. Good thing there's no such thing as the Geneva convention in the grim dark future.

Is that the RPG? Never tried it but sounds kind of interesting. I'd want to be a melta-wielding draconian Commissar. :D

The lore is pretty cool.

Salamanders.

I think the reason there's no general topic is that each separate game has gotten its individual topic. I've never been into the tabletop side of things, but I've read a lot (far too many...) of the novels and I think I've played almost all of the video games.

I think my biggest regret with this franchise is that there's no video game version of Battlefleet Gothic. I think I'd squee a little if I got to smack a Tau warship around with a Nova Cannon. Or commit to ramming speed.  8)

I have my doubts about where 40k is going, at least with the video games anyway. Space Marine was a good game, but now Storm of Vengeance and this new Space Wolf game? At least Space Wolf looks decent, even with the dumbing down of the audience, but Storm of Vengeance is just downright retarded.

That's what happens when you license an IP too freely to all and sundry.

Also, Storm of Vengeance deserves to be blammed.
