Catching animals
« on: November 03, 2014, 11:11:15 pm »

Any reliable methods for catching live animals? I've set out cage traps but I'd prefer something a little faster.

Creating bottlenecks is the only way to speed it up.

Also, animals do tend to come onto the map in somewhat predictable locations.  Try to keep an eye on where you see the animals coming in, and concentrate your traps in that area.

Some animals can also be baited by placing food, booze, or items out in the open surrounded by traps.

You can try building "honey pots". Chain up a puppy and surround it with cage traps, preferably in a small corridor. Doors work well for building destroyers. Strategic removal of ramps to create bottlenecks can speed up catching benign creatures.

What exactly are you after? I can export meat with less than a dozen cage traps. And if you go into breeding you can buy whole caravans with tamed exotic pets. Best yield for me bring the traps that are pathed to by juicy building destroyers (with a door and chest as bait) but not interfering with small critter movements (so you do not have to clean them of crundles every week).

Old zoo keeper advice: Make a trenches, who will divinde part for 4 parts. Just channel and remove raps later, making small passages (1x1). Animals are trying to get from one map end to other, so if only way to get to other side of map is by your cage traps... you will get many animals very fast.

But please, do not kill goblins... Do not slave them. You can catch them, strip them, take off They weapons and relase these poor creatures...

I pit my one wrestler squad against naked goblins, and if a goblin makes it through, he gets turned to gibbs by ten large serrated disks of iron.

I feed goblins to my grizzly bears. It is an age old tradition. Respect the culture of my dwarves.

That's fine.  It was the "catch and release" suggestion that got me twisted.

We must be reading the wrong comment then. This is the one I'm looking at. He specifically says not to kill them.

Because... Killing is just bad. Goblins wants live! They are so angry on everybody just because they got into hate spiral, but if you will show them mercy... They will change... and They will live in peace! You must just show them They can... Just... Stop hatenes spral. Stop killing... They are just...spoiled by hate, but very tolerant. Look at them! They even saved human and dwarf childrens when They has been lost in forest... and adopted them, threated like They own childen...

How you can kill so wonderfull creatures?!?
