Stars Beyond Reach- 4x by Arcen
« on: November 03, 2014, 05:02:37 pm »

This World is Mine.

"The short: 4x, hexes, hex-shaped map, 14 races planned (8 playable), 3 leader options per race, no units (think SimCity), sci-fi but planet based, and (probably) with co-op multiplayer.

The even-shorter: Think Civilization meets SimCity meets AI War meets New Stuff." They'll be races from the Last Federation and AI war.

Rockpapershotgun article, featuring a talking planet and:
"The languages are literally transcoded text, so as you use linguists to unravel the languages you don’t know (if you care to), then you can better piece together what is being said. At the moment my intent is to make it so that you can take a guess at diplomatic discussions by kind of mashing buttons in languages you can half read. ;) And then see the results if you want to take that sort of gamble. That may not work out in practice, but I have some interesting ideas there that I want to play with, anyway."

While I don't always love their games, I love the absolute passion for their craft that Arcen displays. This one looks amazing, so hopefully the game focus pulls through a little better than The Last Federation.

Agree 100%.  Arcen games is one of my favourite developers that tends to make games I don't really like that much.   :P  I'll probably pick it up just like I pick up all of their games eventually.

Is it random transcoded text per game? what if someone posts a translation guide on a wiki site on day 1?

Probably. It's not that hard to generate a random transcoding (even if you want it to sounds good- rules for what sounds good are relatively simple, make it syllabic and make words distinct (I'm not sure what state of the art is here, but Soundex System has been around since the 1920s).

I'm very intrigued - I love AI war but I find the rest of their other games a bit too shallow. Like expanded mobile games rather than full blown PC games - lots of re-playability, but no real depth.

This does sound great though, and if they can put some real depth into it I can imagine it'll be great.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

Until recently, this game was known as Spectral Empire, which was a name that I really came to dislike.  It wouldn't have served the game well.  A huge thanks to Draco18s for suggesting The Stars Are Beyond Reach a month ago.  We shortened that a bit, and we've added the tagline "This World Is Mine" (that's a tagline, not a subtitle).  But the core title is just awesome and really does the theme of the game proud.

Oh man, I forgot about this thread.

Me, I'm a fan of the quarantine zone cream, although yes, Tales of Woe is great.

This thread has been quiet for a while...  The release date has slipped several times this year, and has settled (for now) on March 2016, after a small hiatus to do a smaller game to release in January.  The RPS article daisy chains to the Arcen news post, then Arcen forums, if you want to know absotively errythang.

Arcen tends to try new and interesting things mechanically, even when they don't stick the landing...  I am hopeful that they can prove the old quote true:  "A game's only late until it ships, but it sucks forever."

I really like the art style on this game; looking forward to seeing all the things.

There were a lot of factors involved in their decision, but I agree with what Chris decided; Christmas is a hard season for a new release as an indie developer.  And of course, every player always says that they'd rather have it complete than on-time.

So yeah, here's to seeing the miniproject develop and to SBR next March.

Arcen is a weird company. They make games whose ideas I love, but the implementation ends up being a bit meh, meaning that I don't play them much. In the end I still buy their stuff, because I want to support someone actually having new ideas and trying to implement them, even if it doesn't work out 100%.

So yeah, I'm so going to buy this, even though I will likely end up playing Stellaris instead, but who knows? This could be the thing that redefines the genre, since that hasn't really happened since..umm... Master of Orion. :P

Wait... your hope is that it sucks? Are you working for Wargaming.net?  ???
Also, in modern times, a game is late until you ship it, and it sucks until you patch it. (Then it sucks in new and exciting ways)
