The stories of my vampire mayor dwarf
« on: November 01, 2014, 05:31:32 pm »

I happened to notice pretty quickly that one of my dorfs was a vampire (it was pure luck, I was looking over their relationships out of curiosity) so I had her sealed away. Then she somehow won election for Mayor (Vote for Urista McVampire; tough on crime, tougher on throats!) and put through a mandate for some object I didn't care to make. I just replaced her, thinking that'd be the end of it, but the game still recorded her mandate and had one of my Carpendorfs accordingly beaten for not doing the job ):

In retaliation, I had my miners drop a cave-in on her. That amused me, I think I'll drop another.

I prefer to keep vampires around. I had one literally punch through a zombies chest, then proceed to grab it's spine and swing it around by the spine.

I can't risk that one might decide to om-nom my legendary armor/weaponsmith ):

I give all my legendaries individual rooms right beside their workshops, and keep all mayoral quarters near the dorms, with the barracks right there, the meeting hall over that, and the dining room directly adjacent.

I've just had my first vampire victim, sadly it happened to my hammerlord  >:(. I'm pretty sure the guy my dorfs had elected for mayor last season is to blame. He's 70 years older than everyone else, doesn't seem to eat or drink (in fact he's the only sober person in the entire fortress) and is the only one who's been a member of more than 1 civ. He also worships the god who's been known to curse people. That's textbook vampirism, right?

I guess I'll throw him in the river and see if he drowns to know for sure.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And they seemed like such nice people...

I had a vampire-mayor once. I just sealed him into a room with a chair, also made him the bookeeper, and let him get mad when mandates weren't met. He stayed happy overall, however, because he kept "admiring a fine bridge lately" -- the one I had used to trap him in the room before walling it off completely --  and "admiring his own fine chair lately"

I tried changing the mayor to someone else, but he kept getting re-elected despite his only relationships at the fort being three "passing aquantances" and the fact that no one had seen him for months.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

That won't necessarily help. It is possible for a vampire to "have a drink" right in the crowded dining hall, and for the dwarfs to only notice when they find a dead body "totally drained of blood" sitting next to them when they sit down for dinner. I've had it happen a few times. Despite the fact that there should have been a dozen witnesses, no one saw a thing.

Meanwhile, in adventure mode, you stop to get a quick sip and everyone in the city is a witness.

-Why'd ya vote for Urist? No one has seen him in ages!
-Yer, he's not a sociable sort. But I'll tell you what, we haven't had any dwarves die in their beds since the last election and that's plenty o'reasons for me!

In certain circumstances - hostile environments - a vampire member can be very useful.  Roomcarnage (see http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=139393.0 ) is a pretty dramatic example of that
