Dwarves don't mass respond to dumping orders anymore
« on: November 01, 2014, 06:36:28 am »

In fact, nobody does at all anymore.

I got a massive hauling job to take out all of the boulders from the reservoir, and there are at least 40 idlers out of the 60 dwarves I have, and nobody does anything. Even when I designate a single stone to be hauled away to the nearest available spot because a workshop needs to be built there, nobody does anything.

Back in 34.11, everyone who was not doing anything responded to dumping jobs. Everyone. Unless they had refuse hauling disabled, everyone hauled stuff to the dump.

But since 0.40.01, nobody gives a shit about dumping anymore. I now have to designate a stockpile under the stuff I want away, and then I need to designate a stockpile large enough to hold all of that, and then set it to take from the other stockpile. Dumping was way easier. What is this bullshit?

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

This 'bullshit' as you call it is a tiny bug which is fixed already in the next verison.

To solve it for now 'o'rder your dwarfes to collect refuse and remains from outside. That makes them do the job.

Relax a bit, bugs are to be expected at this stage of developemt.

The items designated for dumping require the refuse hauling labour, from what I know. And for versions 40.xx, there is a bug where dwarves will not automatically dump items that are marked as "inside". This bug will be fixed for version 40.15.

If you want to resolve this issue (somewhat) in your current version/world, you can change the standing orders to allow dwarves to dump "outside" objects, as it is labelled: Press o-r-o in the in-game menu.

Thanks for the workaround, it now works :D

I'm pretty sure if you had done a little looking around on the forum, maybe used the search function a bit, you'd have found the answer yourself

The default setting being the "wrong" one does seem to be "less than ideal".
change the standing orders to allow dwarves to dump "outside" objects, as it is labelled: Press o-r-o in the in-game menu.
It took me all day and several backup saves to figure this out after a dead Giant Bat rotted and made miasma in my bedroom level.
I was annoyed enough that I couldn't seem to get the thing butchered, but then when
I finally got them to clean the blood/vomit, but they STILL left the corpse... (even moving it after I built a chair in the spot  ::)

At first, I thought my only options were DFHack commands, or Atom Smasher.
Not wanting to learn to use DFHack or do a ridiculous, unrealistic bridge in the hall of my bedroom area,
This problem frustrated me until *incredulous* [as the OP], I began searching.

Thankfully this thread was not hard to find.

Setting flexible; mostly sci-fi &/or fantasy (I know SW, MiddleEarth, DnD, & ST best, but Ulisses Spiele & Cypher System high on list too. There are a few other niche sys. like DCC, a homebrew 3.5 or Pathfndr I/II; But at this point I'd even DM or play a well-run 5e game. Let the ideas flow, and never forget the 4 pillars of an RPG!
