Evolve - Hunt or be Hunted... Released... RE RELEASED F2P

Evolve...
Now I was going to write up a big thing but excuse me, gotta kill a Monster...

Right, Back... It's dead...

Evolve is the next thing coming out of the hands of Turtle Rock Studios. The same crew that created the 4vHorde that is Left 4Dead. Evolve is based on the same styled idea of this but instead of a Horde it is a Solo Monster controlled by another player, leaving a 4v1 gameplay. The 4 Hunters consist of different Classes which need to work together to make any work towards bringing the creature down while the Monster needs to do his best to Hunt the animals on the map to increase their armour and their chance to evolve into higher and stronger tiers...

So lets talk about the Monster...

At the start you begin with a Goliath. The Goliath is the usual Fire Breathing Hulk of a creature. Think something that likes to smash and you got a good idea. With 4 abilities allowing it to pick up large slabs of stone to throw at targets, a leaping smash that will propel you towards them and smash down, a charge which is basically a bullrush and finally the all important Fire Breath. In using these abilities along side your large and powerful claws you need to smash away at the hunters until they go down and make sure they don't get back up. Ideally all at once for the cleansweep of a victory...

Next are the Hunters, here you have a Medic, Trapper, Assult and Support. Each with abilities that can assist eachother and improve their chances of taking down the big guy himself. Unlike the Monsters thirdperson styled hackandsmash gameplay this is done in the classic FPS. A quick look at the class names should let you know what they do but there is other things they can do to help or hinder eachother/monster...

I would go into detail atm. But gotta go kill some Hunters... Bwahahahahah...

Its currently having a Weekend Close Alpha, but maybe there are some Keys out there or applying will get you into the weekend before its over...

Please include a link for us lazy peeps next time. :p

I searched it up on Steam and it says it's already in my library. Why is that? And why am I not able to play even though there're 12k people playing it right now? I'm utterly a bit confused. Nevermind. It's because I own XCOM.

Someone posted two keys in the Steam forums, I entered one and it (of course) said that I already own the game, but asked me if I want to download it... I'm downloading.

Since Steam still lets me pre-order it, does it get removed from my library once it's out of alpha? Seems so (according to several forum posts). Lame.
Well, at least for me it's not worth downloading 14 GB then. I'm just going to watch the streams a bit.

I've got like four alphas waiting on four different emails,t hree different providers.  One confirmed by evolve to be guaranteed access so we'll see if I get it.

Does preorderring it on steam give you access to the alpha?

Owning the XCOM remake does.  XCOM is the gift that keeps on giving.

That explains the "Evolve" in my library which I had been ignoring because I didn't know what it was or where it came from.

14 GB seems excessively large.

14 GB isn't that bad when you compare it to the size of some other big games that have come out recently. This is a game with AAA production values, it's going to be big.

Honestly 14 gb is starting to be pretty typical.

We are already at the point where computers have Terabites as standard... or rather as the minimum.

If we didn't live in a world where basic infrastructure and resources like internet access and water is a commodity people scalp you for 14gb wouldn't be a problem.  But we do.

I've played four games so far.  Impressions!

First of all, there's two characters for all five classes, but one of them starts out locked and you have to get achievements with the others to unlock it.

The assault has an assault rifle that does piddly damage but can easily hit the monster from extreme range for chip damage which adds up.  He also has mines which explode, and a lightning gun that does a shitload of damage but has to recharge after a few seconds.  And a shield, which goes well with the lightning gun, letting you get in close and let him have it, then back off while it recharges.

The trapper has an SMG that does basically nothing it feels like, but her main thing is utility obviously.  She has a pet monster that's you will fucking hate when you play the alien.  It's pretty slow but it will follow you everywhere.  I don't think it's actually possible to get it off your tail and if the enemy is patient enough to tail it you can't really hide from them.  She also has the portable arena you probably know about and a gun that shoots harpoon traps that leash the monster to a small area.

Those are the only hunter classes I've played.

The monster is very tough to play well.  I've only seen the monster win once so far and it was me who did it, bitches.  You start out like right fucking next to the hunters but they take a bit to spawn so you can figure out what you want to do.  The goliath can climb walls and jump really far and his powers let him jump for damage, breathe fire, throw rocks, and charge.  None of htem do a lot of damage at first but once they're leveled up they're nasty.  Max level firebreath will tear shit up.

It's very hard to lose the hunters once they're on you so you really have to make every second count.  Don't neglect eating since that's how you recharge your armor and evolve.  Always keep your goal in mind and think about your surroundings, it's easy when you're being chased like an animal to start thinking like one too.  Use your training, Paul Atreides.  Also abuse the climbing.  You can climb forever, hunters have to recharge their jetpacks.  If they climb after you and you knock them back off, tough luck buddy.

If you can full-on shake them for even a minute or two you've probably won.  They're very good at sticking to your trail but if you pull shenanigans and escape to the other side of the map they'll have trouble reacquiring it.  Carrion birds will sometimes land on corpses you're eating so it's not foolproof, but you can probably get away or lay an ambush.  Once you're level 3 it's pretty easy to wipe them but even the level 1 monster can probably down a hunter at least.  Downing the trapper deactivates the portable arena by the way, pro tip.

Spoiler: How to monster: (click to show/hide)

Two other tricks I've heard but haven't tried.  Instead of running away which is what they'll assume you did, consider climbing onto a vantage point and just staying right there at the start.  Now you can throw a rock or something to surprise them and give yourself some early distance while they heal up.  People love formulas and most people can't deal with change at all, which is why you can do silly shit and win in league of legends.  Going on the offensive right at the start might throw them for a loop.

Instead of spreading out your points, max them out at the start.  Maxed abilities do a ton of damage so leveling one at the start would be another good way to surprise the hunters.  Maybe combine it with the first one, smack them with a gigantic rock-throw right when the match starts to put them completely off their game.  This could go badly for you too though, if they're smart and exploit your lack of versatility.

I take down noob hunter teams at early lvl 2 most the time. Remember as the Monster Goliath. Open areas are more frien then you think. An ope  area gives you space to jump, slam, chargd and throw rocks while I closed areas are death. Always take a single Charge point at the start. Use that to run away faster or through the trapper/medic to seperate them. You cqn usually get a few moments of alone time if you do...

My first few stabs at this aren't going terribly well.  First game it was a slideshow, so I had to abandon and reduce video settings (at which point it's now running totally smooth).  Next game I got landed as the monster, did okish to start but it stopped letting me eat or use abilities - presumably I was doing something wrong or missing something, I dunno.  Since then it's had me replace a bot right at the end of two games, and disconnected me on two more.

I was going to call my job to see if we had a spare key for me, but apparently this is not a thing on PS4 and I doubt my PC will be able to run it satisfactorily.

By the way I have an extra PC key.  I'm not gonna post it here for some random escaped lunatic or bot to snipe, so PM me if you want it.

Everyone who has a copy of Xcom can play Evolve Alpha right now.

I tried it for a bit yesterday with a code someone gave me but it lagged so bad that I gave up.
