I remember this being a problem in the past. I am only using plum helmet for brewer so I am not cooking them nor am I cooking or brewing seeds.

However I am running out of seeds constantly. What are the best practices to get as much seeds as possible (other than trading).

Fertilizing with potash really helps. Wood burner--> ash--> ashery-->potash-->farm plot--> fertilize.

Or even then, Someone has the bag of seeds, and someone else generates another "plant plump helmets" job.

Ah yes, dwarves love complaining about lack of seeds. It's not a glitch, it's a feature! (in seriousness though, if you're not cooking them, forbidding them, or dumping them down a hole, there shouldn't be any trouble with plump helmets, just check the farm plots and see if they have already been planted using t and seeing if there are seeds in the plot)

My money's on what someone already said - that whatever container(s) they're in is being used by another dwarf, which treats the seeds as if they don't exist at that particular point.

That's the reason I forbid all barrels from my seed stockpile. Because just having the seeds in a bag can cause enough of the spam, and having a bunch of the seed bags all in one barrel is pretty much a nightmare if you want anything to be planted.

My other suggestion would to make sure you didn't accidentally make them cookable in the kitchen menu. At the very least, you can check that menu to see if you actually DO have the seeds, or if you're out of them for whatever reason. (z) (I think, I'm doing this from memory) then hit the right arrow key until you get the right screen.

Forbidding barrels on the seed stockpile is a good start, but bags can be almost as bad.  If you're careful you can use forbidden doors, burrows and/or hatches and levers to make a "no bag farm zone". Let your farmers and brewers live in there and never let them get their mits on a bag!

It's also quite possible that your seeds are still inside plump helmets waiting to be brewed or eaten! That is one of those things that bugs me, but there  isn't much to do about it except for building another still, lots of barrels, and brewing like crazy.

second the last 2. With the 'new' hauling, dwarfs would get the barrel or bag to pick up items instead of gathering it one by one. A huge boon when cleaning up after sieges, but a pain in this case. Someone wants to go plant a seed, but the barrel or bag gets nabbed before he gets there

Yup. A nearby "acceptable materials" stockpile giving to kitchen (which is SOP for all workshops either way), and double stockpile for seeds in the farm area. Though forbidden strategic reserve "for use in case of dwarf stupidity" is also a healthy idea - once you get some to spare, that is.

The planters still carry one seed. It's when someone else goes to collect seeds from a still or dining hall when they pick up the bag
